QB Brighton/ Bway

Looking at old maps from the 70's 80's, I thought about the random times I seemed to see the rare QB train (esp in the '80's). I seem to recall seeing a couple signed for Astoria in the AM rush, but the map only has service from Coney Island to 57th St for about 1 hour Mon-Fri. What was the schedule (or the deal) with that line? And I never used to see more than a handful of passengers on the QB trains.

First 2 of the morning would go to Astoria and come back as RR trains to 36/4 and lay up.

After Chrystie St opened, the D on the Brighton was the big story. Brighton now had 6th Ave service, making it no longer a Broadway-only line. In addition the QJ was taking over as the Brighton Local, meaning that, if not for those QB specials you speak of, the Brighton Line would have gone from 100% Broadway service down to 0% Broadway service, a shock that Brighton riders were not ready for.

Those QB specials were a consolation, and, I suppose, since they weren't in the way, ran at various intervals for many years.

Granted, however, this is all before my time, but I've read up on it.

Actually, the way it was originally set up, the slots for the 5 QBs that would have gone to Nassau St if they were QJs were filled by an equal number of RJs that operated mostly to E/Pky in the AM where they laid up. After the RJ route was eliminated, the RR/Nassau Specials filled those same slots only they terminated at Chambers St where they laid up on the former south side of the Manny B tracks for returning RR PM specials as they weren't needed for any sort of QJ service anyhow. By the way, even though the trains were signed up for "RR/Nassau St" and were RRs as far as the public was concerned, those of us in RTO continued to refer to them as "RJs" when passing info between towers.

I recall seeing brown diamond "RR/Nassau St" bullets on side signs, perhaps on R16/27/30/32/38s, but I don't recall ever seeing such a front brown diamond sign. Were there such front signs on the rolls of the R40's and 42's even though they were never used?

It seemed strange seeing the usually-yellow RR in brown. Did any other letters have multiple colors? I know that during the major Manhattan bridge re-routes there were both yellow and orange Q's etc, but that represents irregular service, not regular routes.

The original RR/Nassau St signs were green like the Bway RR signs. By the time the MTA changed the color scheme, the RR Nassau service had been abandoned, even though there were brown Nassau RR signs on the cars and that includes the R-44s and 46s even though 75 ft cars were banned from Nassau.

Not exactly... the brown R specials were seen IN SERVICE at Bway/Myrtle by myself many times..
They used the "redbird" R30's.

you're right. the diamond rush hour brown R specials usually ran between metropolitan avenue to 95th street. it usually ran R-30's and R-42s.

actually one end of the train had the yellow diamond rush hour R bullet (going towards 95th street) and the other end had the M bullet (going towards metropolitan avenue). yes, i've seen this back in the mid 1980s myself as well.

From what I recall, there were mainly R27/30's on the Nassau RR with the white lettering on black signs. A few times I may have seen R-32s or 42s with the green RR on the front ends.

When the B/D Southern lines ran on Bway during a Manhattan Bridge closure, they had yellow signs for what was their "regular" routes for a couple of years. Same with orange signed Q trains via 6 Ave for another part of the Bridge closure.

When the Q began going up 6th Avenue, they operated pre GOH R32s & R42s signed up with yellow diamond Q. When the R68s began taking over the route in 1989, they too were signed up yellow diamond Q. When the R68As began operating on that route in 1995, they were signed up yellow Q (no diamond). The first time I saw an orange Q on a regular basis was when the R38s operated on the Q in 1989 for a couple of months. I don't remember what the R40s were signed as when they started operating all services on the Q in 1997, but I think they were also signed yellow circle Q.

The R40s at long last displayed the orange Q, from when they switched from the B line until 2001.

In the 1970's or early 1980's the MTA produced a series of train schedules for each subway route - during the days when the QB, RR, and the blue M still existed. These small folded schedules were a treasure trove of information and a clue to the "behind the scenes" operations of the trains.

What I found very interesting was that the QB rush hour trains were listed on the blue M-train schedule!

The reason the QBs were on the M schedule is because the QB service was an integral part of the M employee timetable and was operated by M crews. Also logically, for Brighton Line passengers, the QB service was a Brighton Lcl and for passengers seeking lcl service it made perfect sense.

I see. So the RJ/RR via Nassau compensated for a gap in QJ trains via Nassau because in the space of a QJ, there was a QB via Bway instead.

The situation between the RR and the M when the RRs were still going to Astoria was the same as the one between the RR and the QB. There weren’t enough cars to provide the full service needed for the S/B M in the AM so the first 2 RR Nassau specials went through to Met where they became S/B Ms. In the PM the process was reversed and 2 M layups at Met returned S/B as the last 2 RR Nassau St specials. On Bway, the first 2 QBs ran through to Astoria where they made 2 S/B intervals one to Canal and the other through to 95 St. In the PM the Canal St layup was put in N/B as a RR to Astoria where it and a through RR from 95 St retuned S/B as the last 2 QBs.

There were various permutations of yellow bullet and diamond Qs since when the colors were rearranged in the early 1980s, and the double letters were in the process of being eliminated, the Q was still a rush hour only service hence the diamond. When the Manny B service changes went in, yellow Q bullets we’re added since the Q was now a more or less full time service.

Not all the QBs were operated by M crews. Depending on the way the work programs fell, the QBs that went into and came out of RR service were operated by RR crews. The same was true for the RR nassau specials that went into and came out of M service. If a more efficient work program could be generated by having RR crews operate one or more of the QBs then that was what was done and vice versa.
