QB Brighton/ Bway

Looking at old maps from the 70's 80's, I thought about the random times I seemed to see the rare QB train (esp in the '80's). I seem to recall seeing a couple signed for Astoria in the AM rush, but the map only has service from Coney Island to 57th St for about 1 hour Mon-Fri. What was the schedule (or the deal) with that line? And I never used to see more than a handful of passengers on the QB trains.
