Decibels beyond belief noise

All of the new generation NYC subway cars come with, among other things, incredible noise. Are the AC traction motors the cause? If not, what is the culprit? Also, what is being done to relieve the noise for the riding public?

What is this noise you speak of. I do not hear any noise.

I'm thinking of two distinct noises that I hear on the R142 and newer models that I don't hear on the older vehicles:
1. When the train accelerates, there is a high-pitched whining sound that is borderline deafening (even for a guy like me who has hearing loss); and
2. When the train brakes, there is an agonizing, loud sound that occurs until the train reaches a complete stop.

Or the 32's with their original steel shoes screeching to a stop.

The interiors of the NTT are pretty quiet, which matters most as subway riders spend most of there inside the trains themselves.

Exception of the 44 and 46s, most of the old cars are loud even on the inside, not complaining as that's part of there charm IMO.

Actually, my first ride on rapid transit was on the MFSE Market and Frankford cars in Philly back in the 1940's. I'll take the air compressors and hum of the DC traction motors any day over the noisy videos that I've seen of NYC's "state-of-the-art" subway cars.

Yeah and I rode the old IRT cars on the Lex, the BMT Standards and the early IND cars as well. They may have been slower than the latest Japanese junk on the rails today, but they were certainly alot quieter and more comfortable particularly the Standards.

Never mind the 10s. The R-16 through 21 GE cars also emitted a rather high pitched whine when accelerating and the GE R-22s emitted a hum similar to the sound of a propeller airplane. That was due to the blower cooled resistor bank which was part of the motor generator unit on GE cars from that era. Starting with the R-26s, GE went back to fresh air cooled resistors and the cars were much quieter.

That high pitched whine is the inverter, converting the third rail DC power to AC power for the traction motors. LIRR M7 cars sound similar. The whine only lasts for two or three seconds when the train accelerates after a station stop. After that, it's quiet inside the R142s, R143s, R160s, and R188s. As another poster said, the old R10s were far noisier, inside and out.

2. Those are the friction brakes taking over to stop the train. With all this talk of how quiet trains are supposedly getting, those friction brakes are louder than sin! They sound worse than the R32s, if you can believe that!

The Presidents' Conference Committee studied that, and, to my ears they found ways to dampen braking noise. Then the PCC's developed a peculiar squeal on curves, one that railfans would imitate at clubs whenever silent movies of PCC's were shown.

However, the TA seems to have focused on interior noise only.
