1. When the train accelerates, there is a high-pitched whining sound that is borderline deafening (even for a guy like me who has hearing loss....

That high pitched whine is the inverter, converting the third rail DC power to AC power for the traction motors. LIRR M7 cars sound similar. The whine only lasts for two or three seconds when the train accelerates after a station stop. After that, it's quiet inside the R142s, R143s, R160s, and R188s. As another poster said, the old R10s were far noisier, inside and out.
