Unfortunately, I know nothing about Ferry history or operations.I was very young, 3 & 1/2 in April or May 1954 but I remember a ferry from the west side across the Hudson to Hoboken(?). My grandmother came down from Middletown to help when my brother was born (we lived in Queens). When she went back, our family drove her from Queens to the west side. I don't remember much, just there was a crowd, and my grandmother was standing across from us. Then there was some kind of gate in front of us, and the boat ferry started pulling away. My grandmother waved, and she and everyone else on the deck got smaller and smaller with the increasing distance. I didn't get that it was a ship, my parents must have explained that to me. About a year later in the spring of 1955, the co-op nursery school I was in, piled all the kids onto a bus, and we drove to south Ferry, and took the Ferry to Staten Island. This I remember very well. We all stood right out on the deck, just back from the gates, and could see the harbor. |

I like the idea but the next question is who would operate and maintain ?I usually post maritime events on the Almanac. I do this because many here follow other modes of transportation as well and there really is no other place to get this news. Very often trips on ferryboat and motor vessel afford photos opportunities of rail structures and trains from a river view. Were you thinking of starting a new board? Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I used to take care of the Theatre deLys' sound system back in 1969 when Vonnegut's "Happy Birthday Wanda June" was playing there on Christopher Street. While the show was going on, I'd wander around down there (you can only watch the same old stuff so many times) and would walk down to West Street and see the pier there while the highway was still up.I'm pretty sure it said "LACKAWANNA" there up on the front without the Erie. I know the one further south was a joint pier though. |

Don't get me wrong, the crews were always great when they rolled their eyes knowing what happened, and tried to keep their sense of humor. But if you rode the lesser railroads on a regular basis, they made the subways look good. :)So I guess we should just blame government since based on what we hear, it was THEM running the railroads, back in the golden age of politics that we want to elect again now. Heh. |

Those are two railroads that DESERVED to die because of the shitheads that ran them. :(A little bit of hyperbole? Both railroads suffered heavily from the loss of traffic to trucks and passengers to the highways. Their also was the loss of a great deal of the coal traffic, the Lackawanna's lifeblood when many home and apartment houses switched to oil. There were very heavily taxed by the state and the had to maintain large suburban train services. They also suffered a great deal of damage from two hurricanes and didn't have the resources to make repairs. In any experience that I had with either railroad the crews and staff were friendly and helpful and the morale was high. You would not have had this if the management with as bad as you say. I don't hesitate to post maritime news on this board and very often it does have some relation to a rail topic. Have you tried the West Coast Ferry forums. Its a different kind of setup but they do have a section on the northeast and last years I posted several threads. Absolutely correct about the employees doing their very best and doing eye rolls over the wreckage of the railroad. But for us "regulars" they would remind us of how long they'd gone without raises or a contract and some of the recurring stupidity they had to deal with on a regular basis.I must admit I did enjoy some free rides because they ran out of tickets here and there. :) |
