Several ferry routes and a lot of history behind them. Unfortunately, I know nothing about Ferry history or operations.

I was very young, 3 & 1/2 in April or May 1954 but I remember a ferry from the west side across the Hudson to Hoboken(?).

My grandmother came down from Middletown to help when my brother was born (we lived in Queens). When she went back, our family drove her from Queens to the west side.

I don't remember much, just there was a crowd, and my grandmother was standing across from us. Then there was some kind of gate in front of us, and the boat ferry started pulling away. My grandmother waved, and she and everyone else on the deck got smaller and smaller with the increasing distance. I didn't get that it was a ship, my parents must have explained that to me.

About a year later in the spring of 1955, the co-op nursery school I was in, piled all the kids onto a bus, and we drove to south Ferry, and took the Ferry to Staten Island. This I remember very well. We all stood right out on the deck, just back from the gates, and could see the harbor.
