As a lynching is an extrajudicial punishment by a mob, which does not necessarily involve hanging and has been carried out against people of all races, Salaam's invocation of a lynch mob is not race related. It is instead the baggage you attach to lynching which is not contained within its definition that leads you to perceive racism where there was not any until you supplied it.

And really how aren't the calls for this particularly gruesome example of retaliation for the death of the engineer an example of lynching? His passing is a tragedy, but in no way does it justify the call for the driver to be executed without trial.

That's because "we" do. I disagree that he's hated because of his race, but Salaam hadn't mentioned that until after you claimed he saw the driver as innocent because of his race. Thus the first instance of racism in this thread was on your part.

Fuck, he's even accusing YOU of it

This isn't about Salaam, this is about you and how rapidly you went on the racist offensive against Salaam. So again, just for the record, you injected race into this discussion.

I point out how racist he is..?

How racist is he? Sure, he mentioned lynching, but again it's only the baggage you attach to that word which gives it any racist connotations.

LA Metrolink re-evaluating safety of Rotem cab cars following Oxnard CA grade crossing collision

Metrolink evaluating train car safety in wake of accident

Sep. 3, 2015 8:50 PM EDT
Metrolink is evaluating the safety of its crash-resistant cars and removing them from the front of trains in the wake of a deadly Southern California derailment, the railroad said Thursday.

The 57 cab cars are passenger coaches that include an engineer's station. They are used when a locomotive is pushing a train from behind.

The cars, built by South Korea's Hyundai Rotem, have features designed to reduce deaths and injuries, such as energy-absorbing crush zones. Metrolink, which serves six Southern California counties, began using them in 2010.

Metrolink had said those features reduced the carnage in February when one of its trains struck a pickup truck that mistakenly drove onto the tracks near Oxnard. The crash killed the engineer and injured 27 passengers.

However, the railroad's review of the accident turned up a possible issue with the cab car, Johnson said.

He declined to be specific, but the Los Angeles Times reported (http://lat.ms/1LOYOqt) that Metrolink wants to determine whether a plow-like attachment on the cab car failed in the collision, allowing debris to get under the wheels and derail it.

"We are taking this step out of an abundance of caution," said Moorpark City Councilman Keith Millhouse, a member of the railroad's board of directors, told the Times. "This is an interim measure until the plow can be evaluated and beefed up if necessary. This is going to be costly for the railroad, but you can't put a price on safety."

A review of the cab cars began earlier this year, Johnson said. The evaluation could take a year to complete, Millhouse said.

Meanwhile, Metrolink is working on an agreement to place leased locomotives in front the cars by month's end, spokesman Scott Johnson said.

Johnson said he had no details on the cost of the engines or how long they will be used because the agreement is still being finalized with BNSF Railway. Johnson said he has not heard of any similar concerns with Hyundai Rotem cab cars elsewhere in the nation.

However, the general use of cab cars in front of trains has been raised as a safety issue.

"We have felt they are dangerous," Tim Smith, California legislative director for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, told the Times. "Cab cars are light in weight and easy to lift off the tracks. As far as safety is concerned, we would like to have a locomotive out in front."
Not even locomotives out in front are derailment-proof. The Metrolink bureaucrats learn nothing whatsoever.

It could very well be that the pilot structure has deficiencies in rigidness. The whole point of the pilot is to prevent derailments after striking an obstruction, and should be sturdy enough to shove it aside and out of the way of the wheels.

Even a cab car should be able to divert most obstructions. The article does seem to make it all quite clear. Ever buy a Hundai? I can see why they want to look into what failed here.

I seem to to remember that the Silverliner MU"s built for the RDG side had a different pilot than the ones built for the Pennsy side. I think the SEPTA"s civil engineers determined sometime later that the RDG ones could be deficient in some circumstances, and those cars were retrofitted with the Pennsy type.

I also remember the NH M-2's as delivered had no pilots at all, then later got them, though different looking than the M-1's. I do not know why they left it off to begin with. None of these cars were built by Budd.

What a stupid thing to say. Of course you can put a price on safety -- we do it all the time, that's what a cost-benefit analysis is. More to the point, if we couldn't, nobody would ever do anything.

Why is it that rail is always subject to ridiculous pronouncements like this -- and other (more dangerous forms of travel -- I'm looking at you, freeways) aren't?
