At one point around 1959 George Horn and I were walking back from Pitkin Yd across Conduit Blvd. In the median were 2 mounds of grass covered earth which George told me were the ends of yd leads A7 and A8 which were to lead to an extension of the IND subway going farther east but I don't recall any more info at the time. That was my first intro to anything to do with the possible existence of any subway construction beyond Euclid. |

It may have just been a misread on the part of the particular cartographer who copied the map from B of T specs. A poorly written 6 could be misread as a 5 and is often misread as a 0 which would have been even worse if that were the case. If I recall that particular map, it doesn’t even show Bway/ENY station at all. |

By the way, I found an article in the Brooklyn Eagle from April 17th, 1930. It shows the Fulton subway on its present route, via Truxton Pl and Norman Pl, through the present B'way Jct IND station location. Although no mention is made about the station itself, it has that section of the contract ending at Jamaica and Alabama Ave. Also, no mention of tunneling under the BMT's streetcar barn. |

Did George Horn and/or Martin Schachne ever speak about 76th St.?I knew Marty Schachne for many years. We spoke of his trips with George Horn on several occasions and according to him 76th Street was never built. Dave Rogoff drew a detailed track map of the entire IND in the early 60's which has the the full track diagram for the proposed 76th Street Station but the map clearly states that it was never built. One cannot prove a negative. I was fortunate to have made the acquaintance of several of the men who were prominent in the railfan community in the late 50's and early 60s. Gentlemen like Marty Schachne, George Horn, Roger Arcara, Herman Rinke, Dave Rogoff and Bernard Linder. Some of these guys grew up with the IND. Back in 1930, there were several variations of the IND Fulton St Line proposed none of which yet included the current alignment. One of them, which I have a plan of, called for the line to continue straight down Fulton St under the Jamaica Line. Another called for it to turn under Liberty Av after ENY and connect to the Fulton St El about where it does now. The current configuration via Pitkin Av was the last one considered so 76 St wouldn’t even have been in the first 2 proposals. |

Thanks!I met and spoke with Martin Schachne very briefly on the May '66 Lo-V trip. Always saw Roger Arcara at NY Div meetings and Bernie Linder as well. Spoke w/Dave Rogoff briefly at a division meeting - wished I could have spoken with him more, since he passed suddenly in 1969 from a hear attack. Never met George Horn or Herman Rinke - wished I could have. You're right - gentleman all of them - always willing to chat, share, and discuss transit with railfans. |

The IND tunnel does cross underneath both the bus garage and the old BMT shops and yard. See this official NYC satellite map showing the IND tunnel in blue. The tunnel crosses Jamaica Av just east of Fanchon Place as it curves south down Pennsylvania Av. Also, Google street view shows subway gratings on Fanchon Pl alongside the bus garage north of Jamaica Av, as well as the subway grating and emergency exit on the north side of Jamaica Av just east of the corner. |

The original plans were to have the tunnel curve onto Jamaica Ave, to avoid a property dispute with the BMT, whose trolley barn, shops, and train yard were there. What was the proposed route under Jamaica Ave, Steve? The only proposed routes east of B'way/ENY involved the current Pennsylvania Ave one, another below Fulton St, under the Jamaica el, and 2 others running under private property to run either under Pitkin Ave or Liberty Ave. I've heard of these bellmouths but I don't know too much about where they were supposed to go. |
