I was riding the Sea Beach the same year Mr. Rat is talking about and I remember no such connection. The LIRR and the Sea Beast are on much different levels and even an entry switch would be notable.Is it possible that we are talking about freight sidings used by the SBK and still connected in the late 50s? But they were east of the parallel area. |

The stretch of the Sea Beach just east of 8th Avenue certainly appears to the unaided eye to be on the same level as the Bay Ridge Line.But I think Bob Emery's maps would be authoritative as to whether or not a connection every existed between the two. It's not hard to imagine there would be one, but that supposition is not authoritative. And thanks for taking us back to 2005... |

R44`s were tested on the port Washington branch of the lirr out to port Washington,l.I.there are photos of the R44`s laid up in corona yard[worlds fair station,lirr] but no photo are known of the 44`s on the pt.washington btanch.the 44`s were speed tested on the mainline of the lirr between kew gardens & sunnyside yard top speed of 87.7mph was reached.there are several photos of this,along with PATH subway cars speed tested on this same stretch of track. |

I don't recall any evidence of a connection or track work in that area at the time Rat is describing.There WAS work going on at the retaining wall next to the LIRR near the 6th Avenue Interlocking. Initially they began switching southbound trains onto the southbound express and then back onto the local to lessen pressure on the wall, plus shoring up with (IIRC) timbers. That's why I asked which side the work was on. |

I vaguely recall seeing a photo of M2s laid up somewhere in that area - along the PW or near Corona yard. The explanation was that Budd/GE used them as a staging location and shop during the M1 and M2 delivery period. |

If you have seen my posts on this topic, you might have noted that Pitkin Av originally ended at Ruby St (Its Bkln name. 75 St is the same street on the Queens side of the boundary). Unfortunately there are some years missing from the NYC photo archives, but sometime between 1930 and 1950, Pitkin Av was through routed with South Rd which is why at 78 St, Pitkin Av,curves slightly south to follow the configuration of South Rd which was changed to Pitkin Av after it was through routed. Some maps even show the portion of Pitkin Av between 75 and 78 Sts as “South Rd” rather than Pitkin Av. When I first walked the area with the late trainmaster George Abere in 1962, the street configuration was much different from what it was when we walked the same area in 1983. Sidewalks that were not there in 1962 were there in 1983 so your theory about the width of the sidewalks is irrelevant. there are also 2 more interesting factors. The 1983 NYCTA book of emergency exits listed 2 emergency exits on Pitkin Av well past Elderts Lane which we did not see when we checked that area at street level. We also discovered a manhole in the middle of Pitkin Av abut 3/4s of a block past Grant Av where the accessible portion of the subway infrastructure ends. The manhole cover was labeled “Independent Subway System City of NY” but when I returned there in 2005 some 22 years later, the street had been completely repaved and the manhole was no longer there. As time goes on and with even more development and construction in the area, the few pieces of evidence of the existence of the station will gradually disappear. |

From the time I first heard of the existence of a partially constructed station at 76 St back in 1962, nobody who claims to have been there ever said that there was any service there or that a complete tiled station shell existed. What they all reported was that only the S/B platform wall was tiled and that the platform surface itself was rough unfinished concrete. None of them ever described it as anywhere near complete. |

I have a copy and it lists the station as 75th St. - the map is dated January 1940 according to Hagstrom's code, and it does show the extension to 106th & Aquaduct.I remember when this was posted here. It was a few years ago at least (maybe on Subtalk?). There was also a copy that turned up on ebay a few years ago as well. I also have a copy of the Queens street map from 1940 (don't remember Hagstrom's exact date), but it also shows the extension to 75th st. and beyond (to 106th & Aquaduct), along the Queens Streets -Pitkin etc. (sorry I don't remember if it follows Pitkin to 106th, or other streets - my stuff is currently in storage). |
