(R) train service still sucks

You can’t spell erratic without a double dose of “R.”

Two months after R-train service to Manhattan resumed, straphangers are complaining that service along the line has gotten worse, with trains bunching in stations and long delays at other times.

“For the first couple weeks it was pretty good, but it’s gotten pretty erratic,” said rider Lou Camporeale, who said he saw two Bay Ridge-bound trains enter the Jay Street–MetroTech station back-to-back before a 15-minute lull during a Friday rush hour.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority closed the tunnels connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan for 13 months of repair work following Hurricane Sandy. Shortly after the tunnels re-opened, riders began seeing delays from Bay Ridge’s only train.

The seemingly unwarranted delays are more infuriating during off-hours, one straphanger said.

“After rush hour, its bad,” said Michael Higgins. “You wait 10, 15 minutes for a train, and then once you’re on, they tell you there’s train traffic ahead. The line should be clear all the way to Downtown Brooklyn.”

And more old cars appear to be on the tracks, riders said. The dingy, 1970s-era cars aren’t just a throwback, they’re a morale issue, said one elected official.

“From a psychological point of view, it’s just a downer,” said City Councilman Vincent Gentile (D–Bay Ridge). “You work all day and this old train is taking you home.”

The announcement and climate-control systems on the old trains are in bad shape, making a rough ride even more stressful, Gentile said.

The erratic service also affects lines adjacent to the R, Camporeale said aboard a Ridge-bound train on Oct. 24.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it is looking into the erratic R-train service now that the full line is functioning again.

“We have ... been engaged in a system-wide look at running times, but held off on the R until the Montague Tube was reopened to begin to collect that data,” said Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz. “That process is ongoing.”

But the transit agency has a communication problem that runs deeper than late trains, according to another Bay Ridge politician’s office.

“In our view, the MTA failed to communicate effectively with the community on tunnel repairs, the challenges it faced in terms of scheduling once service was resumed, as well as changes supposedly made by the agency over the last week to resolve the issue,” said Paul Marrone, a spokesman for Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R–Bay Ridge).

Not all Ridgites were quick to slam the neighborhood train, but boosters are few and far between.

“I got no problems with the R,” said Judy Natt, the lone R Train defender out of about a dozen folks this report spoke with.

While some Ridgeites are still celebrating the return of the R line – closed the summer of 2013 for extensive Superstorm Sandy-related repairs – others have already enlisted the help of local politicians in easing a wait-time that has since nearly doubled.

“Every day during the rush-hour this week, there has been a long wait for a Bay Ridge train, followed by several R trains back to back,” wrote one local resident in an e-mail to this paper on September 19, just four days after the R line’s revival. “Last night, the first R train entered Bay Ridge/95th Street at 6:55 p.m., followed by three additional trains back-to-back.

“People waited up to 20 minutes for a train, then had four trains come in a row,” he went on. “This also affects train service going the other way, since if there are no trains to send out, people up and down the line will experience very long waits and irregular service.”

Councilmember Vincent Gentile is no stranger to complaints like this.

“Our office has been told that service has gotten worse, not better,” he explained at Community Board (CB) 10’s October meeting, held at the Fort Hamilton Senior Center, describing delays and train cuts that have left many riders at their wits’ end.

According to Gentile, after more than a year of construction, there have been a few bumps in the road.

“We’ve got to get Bay Ridge back on track,” stressed Gentile just one month after the line’s full return. He told the crowd that he had already penned a letter to Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) President Carmen Bianco formally requesting a full audit of the entire line, from 95th Street to Forest Hills.

“Residents of Bay Ridge deserve better,” wrote Gentile in his letter, noting specifically that the audit “should include but not be limited to, the number of subway cars used, the frequency of service in relation to the overcrowding, and the state of the subway equipment used.”

Gentile said that he will use the findings in the audit to hold the MTA accountable for inadequate service and see what recommendations can be made to improve service on the Ridge’s only line – something the MTA says they look forward to doing.

“We have completed reviews of the F, L and G lines and are in the process of looking at the A/C line,” said MTA Spokesperson Kevin Ortiz. “We have also been engaged in a system-wide look at running times, but held off on the R until the Montague Tube was reopened to begin to collect that data. That process is ongoing. In the meantime, we look forward to working with Councilmember Gentile on identifying ways to fund our upcoming capital plan which prioritizes replacing subway cars, renewing track, and installing new signals to provide safe, reliable service.”

Riders are encouraged to contact Gentile’s office with complaints of service at 718-748-5200 or via email at VGentile@council.nyc.gov.

Give Gentiles peeps the R32's.

That'll give him something to really complain about.

C line riders wouldn't mind.

Complaining about the R46?
Hell, they are the best looking cars on the rails.

The 160s,although much newer, are bland as bland can be.

This is exactly why Fourth Avenue needs another local services... one which could be furnished by extending the J to 95st.

So now we need a flying team of psychologists at R train stations to counsel riders for the trauma? Or maybe they could run with the '70s theme: play disco music and encourage riders to wear retro clothes.

I really don't see why they just don't split the 160s between the F and R lines... the 46's seem to be fine on the A so I'd imagine they can still run OK on the F even in there senior age... Besides the 2 line used old cars prior the 142s coming when there was much younger 62/As in the system.

You do not assign cars to routes to be fair.

You assign cars to YARDS so that a yard need only care for one kind of car or two, and not the whole fleet.

Fleets are assigned to yards, Routes are assigned to yards. Your route gets what your yard operates.

There are many complaints R riders have, and that R riders are very vocal about.
- Waits of 25 minutes at rush-hour, followed by 4 trains in a row
- Late night shuttle trains that leave a minute ahead of connecting D and R trains
- Late evening weekend service cuts since tunnel re-opened, where every other southbound train drops out at Whitehall
- Past weekend: waits of 30+ minutes all afternoon & evening (both Saturday & Sunday) due to severe reduction in number of R trains

Help me out here.

I can understand that the R-train on Queens Blvd shares its tracks and terminal with the M-train, until Queens Plaza. I can understand a bottleneck with the switching of the M-trains between the R and E train tracks. (Except that on the weekends the R-trains have exclusive usage of the Queens Blvd local tracks and terminal.)

Then at the 60th Street tunnel, the R-train has to be switched both into and out of the stream of N and Q trains for the journey both to/from Manhattan. (Except that on the weekends only the N and R trains use the 60th Street tunnel - unless there's something happening on the #7 line.)

Then at/about 42nd Street/34th Street, the Q-train may/may not be switched into/out of the stream of N and R trains to/from Queens. (On the weekends both N & R trains are local, and the Q-train starts/ends at 57th Street unless there's something happening on the #7 line.)

Then again near the Prince Street station, the N-trains have to be switched into/out of the stream of R-trains to/from the Manhattan Bridge.

Then possibly at the Whitehall Street station some R-trains may terminate there, and possibly some R-trains terminate at the Canal Street station (to use the trackage about the City Hall station).

Unless there's a work-train, the R-train alone uses the Montaque Street tunnel to the DeKalb Avenue station. Unless there's something going on, the R-train has the exclusive use of the Brooklyn 4th Avenue local tracks both to and from the 36th Street and 59th Street stations, and of the tracks to/from the 95th Street terminal.

Wondering, Mike.

Stand at 59th/4th for the next 3 weekends (during the continuation of the Atlantic Ave trackwork) and you'll be shocked at the 25-30 minute waits all afternoon & evening for the R train. Headways have been cut to a theoretical 12 minutes during this weekend trackwork, but real-time headways become 25-30 minutes.

Trains sometime leave 95th a minute or two late, and same at 71/Continental (where they sometimes have to come onto the loudspeaker to "shut it down" at 71/Continental.) Delays then magnify.

Also, around 6pm/6:30pm, deadhead trains are sent out of 95th to 59th, then backtrack down the N line towards Coney Island. Recently the northbound R was stuck at Bay Ridge Ave for 10+ minutes due to a red signal up ahead (caused by the deadhead train). Escaped via the D at 36th to Midtown, ran an errand, and caught up to the same R 20 minutes later. That R train out of 95th was now running 20-25 minutes late to 71/Continental, all because of the deadhead train sent out of 95th immediately ahead of it.

Not the E...it maintains a constant fleet of R160A/B.
If pressed,an R46 will be used, but don't look for it.

Different times,brah..even though I understand completely where you're coming from.

I believe the Q should be the Broadway Local(QT/QB)to Astoria, while N trains resumes express service.

One thing the MTA could do is having a gap train waiting on the center track at Whitehall St but that would be an added expense.

Please do not take my questions as DOUBT about the situation with the R-train, that is not where I'm coming from at all.

One a curious thing happened recently on the MTA website - they stopped giving reasons why there are shut-downs or diversions except to say, that the trains are not stopping somewhere, or being re-routed. For the weekend of Nov 1-2, on the Weekender there's nothing about track work or other issues for the R-train in Brooklyn, what is listed is the re-routing of R-trains as express along Queens Blvd. As well as the N & D trains paired together skipping some of their stations in certain directions.

In light of these R-train troubles and the track work, I'd split the R-train into two groups, one set of R-trains would travel to/from Queens Blvd and the Whitehall Street station. Since both the D & N trains are running, it seems without delays due to the track work - rely upon them to carry the bulk of the R-train ridership to/from Manhattan. Make the Brooklyn R-train a shuttle from 36th Street to 95th Street. For the stations between Court Street and 36th Street, simply run the on-street shuttle buses. Make notices for all stations, and announcements via the website, etc.

However, I'm not in charge of the MTA. It does seem that the MTA took out the words, "Timely" and "Rapid" out of their motto.

Mike

I'm sure riders wouldn't mind an R train shuttle 36-95th that ran every 8-10 minutes like clockwork. D and N are local most upcoming weekends 36-DeKalb to pick up the slack, and the IRT can pick up the slack Atlantic-Court/Boro Hall like they did for the past 14 months during the tunnel shutdown. (Shuttle buses would not be needed.)

I admit that I am not exactly clear just where the track work is taking place. It may make sense to remove the trains as much as possible from that scene, rather slow the trains down to intolerable time lengths, and train bunching. Again from the MTA-website descriptions, I also was not sure if the D & N trains are making local stops or not. If the D & N are making the local stops your suggestion makes sense.

All in all - I think we agree that the MTA could do something to reduce the long wait times between the trains, complete the track work, and not screw up travel for R-train riders (over all) as much as possible.

Mike

They have been running a BMT local out to Forest Hills since 1958, starting with pokey Standards, back when the BMT ran a far heavier Broadway service and 3 Montague Tunnel services. I do not understand it either.

Then we'd have an RJ and a W (to Whitehall) to replace the R as we know it. People headed north of Canal from 4th Avenue must take a Bridge train.

It seems the RJ worked in 2011 for 2 months, though it was something of an oddity in 1967-8, while the QJ did not, whether to Brighton Beach or Coney Island. Go figure.

They should be challenged to to do just that, or get their act together, or polish up their resumes.
