That, of course, assumes that the 4% is set for each fare structure (Subway/bus, MNRR, LIRR) or is just an overall average. You know the MTA with their creative math. |

Yes, it will be $2.48.BTW - if they do keep the 5% on the new base fare of $2.60. There will be only 3 whole nickel amount (remember the MVMs can only work on whole nickel amounts) where there will be nothing left over: $9.90 with bonus is $10.40 which equals 4 fares. (Double that-$19.80 will fall 1 cent short at $20.79) $47.05 with bonus is $49.40 which equals 19 fares. $52.00 with bonus equals $54.60 which equals 21 fares. The MTA should really consider allowing "off-amounts) - that is amounts between the 5 cent increments - in MVMs for credit/debit transactions. Example: $19.81 with bonus is $20.80 which equals 8 fares. ---- I know what some are going to say BUT - I am one of those who do not like have non full fare amounts left over on my MetroCard. $ |

MVMs just don't have the ability/storage capacity to handle penny coins. They should get the program changed to allow for the machines to handle penny amounts on credit/debit transactions. But of course that might make sense. |

People would get rid of their jars of pennies by spending them in MVMs.When post offices had stamp vending machines they took pennies. I once got caught behind some people who were buying stamps with pennies. I think stamps were 39 cents at the time. They deposited 39 pennies and bought a stamp and deposited 39 more pennies and bought another stamp and on and on. I decided mailing my credit card payment could wait until tomorrow. |

Canada, as in so many things, is way ahead of us on this. They have stopped minting pennies. All cash prices are rounded to the nearest nickel. But credit card still go through to the penny. In August, I was at a Mickey D in Vancouver. Cashier asked me for $6 (Canadian of course); gave my credit card and charge was listed as Can $5.98 which was then converted by my bank to US$...point is this is a no brainer, very pragmatic but of course the MTA will never do anything that shows it lives in the 21st century; if it were up to some of these clowns, we would still be using tokens. As far as the fare, it should go to $2.75 but should allow at least 3 swipes on one fare (bus-subway-bus) to be fair; again something all modern transit systems have no problem doing. But this is NY and some moron at NYCT will tell us how people will take advantage of this and so the poor person who needs 3 rides to get to work or whatever will suffer because of MTA paranoia. |

That to me makes more sense (not CENTS! lol). If something costs $2.19, use the two dollar bills, and a mix of either 1 dime, 1 nickel and 4 pennies, or 3 nickels and the 4 pennies. But not 19 pennies. |

They could allow off amounts for credit card purchases. They already sell pre-valued $10 cards outside the system for $9.52. The concept of "off" amounts isn't foreign to them.Do we know yet if they are going offer alternatives (ie: various combination of base fare, bonus, and unlimited changes that would achieve the same 4% increase in fare revenue)? |

Bet it is 50 cents and $1 for the Verrazano. That woud be more than 4%. Staten Islanders will probably get their toll reduced again. |
