Canada, as in so many things, is way ahead of us on this. They have stopped minting pennies. All cash prices are rounded to the nearest nickel. But credit card still go through to the penny. In August, I was at a Mickey D in Vancouver. Cashier asked me for $6 (Canadian of course); gave my credit card and charge was listed as Can $5.98 which was then converted by my bank to US$...point is this is a no brainer, very pragmatic but of course the MTA will never do anything that shows it lives in the 21st century; if it were up to some of these clowns, we would still be using tokens.

As far as the fare, it should go to $2.75 but should allow at least 3 swipes on one fare (bus-subway-bus) to be fair; again something all modern transit systems have no problem doing. But this is NY and some moron at NYCT will tell us how people will take advantage of this and so the poor person who needs 3 rides to get to work or whatever will suffer because of MTA paranoia.
