Most of these renovations have removed the 1960's and 70's era tiling, which in this case, I don't see why not.I do have a lot of nostalgia for this station, as back in the 70's, when the whole system was so grim, dark, and falling apart, this station was like a beacon, bright, and clean and modern. But it's time has come full circle. It's time to move on, and restore it to what it should be.....it's time for a renovation, as the station has begun to show wear. And yes, at this point, about 50 years since it was renovated, is time to be renovated again. So I hope to see this once again:  Here's a photo I took about 8 years ago below:  It's bittersweet for me, as again, being a product of the 70's, and remember what the system was like, and remembering this station back then, it's hard to let it go, but it's time..... |

Yes, Rector St is awful....but that's also a 1960's era, bed renovation, with these tiles waiting underneath to be restored. I don't know why they didn't do Rector St with the other ones.  Granted, yes, 49th St was done better than the other Broadway Stations in the 60's, but still, it's still 50 years old almost and in need of renovation. The stations along 4th Ave in Brooklyn also desperate to have their awful 1960's tile removed to restore the original walls. As for 8th Ave on the N, isn't that an outdoor station? A different category of station. |

No, I totally approve of the renovations at Broad and Fulton, as well as 8th Ave. (And add Essex St to that too). At all those stations, they did an absolutely fantastic job at recreating the tile look of what should have been there from the beginning. The only reason they didn't get that Centre St line look is that the city cheaped out, and decided to do it in the IND look of the new IND.There's plenty of actual IND stations where you can admire the simplistic IND look, but I think they did an astounding job at Broad, Fulton, and 8th Ave to match the rest of the line (and Essex, which only had plain white tiles to begin with no decoration). That said, I also enjoy the simplistic IND look, and unfortunately at many of the renovated IND stations, the new tile does not conform as well as it should to the original IND font and look. |

There are sound absorbing panels between the columns of the express and local tracks. It's also at some local Queens Blvd. stations. It works wonders.I also like the way the fluorescent lighting was designed for this station. |

It's not so much that the city "cheaped out," but that the Nassau St and 14/8 style was state of the art for city subway construction at the time and was done at the same time as the iND. If I recall, the underground LIRR woodhaven Blvd station was done similarly. |

According to Wikipedia:49th Street was originally built in the same style as the other BMT Broadway stations but underwent an experimental renovation in October 1973. New tiling of red glazed brick was installed over the original BMT-style tiled walls, reducing the platforms' widths by several inches; in addition, special ceiling soundproofing and terrazzo flooring were installed. Since the renovation, three of the four street entrances have been reconstructed, leaving only the 47th Street exit on the southbound platform with the red brick appearance; additionally, the soundproofing experiment was not repeated at any other station. Additional false brick tiles were added some time after the 1973 renovation, indicating the presence of a station facility. A passageway leading to an exit at West 47th Street and Broadway was also added after the renovation. Also, one of the staircases on the southbound side is walled off, making only one staircase available to the southbound side. ------------ Please note that the renovation of the 49th Street station was done while I was in high school. I passed through that station on a regular basis when both the EE and RR trains ran, and I remember the old tile work. If the renovation occurred as you said that would mean it happened when I was 7 years old! The renovation work only occurred about 41 years ago, in October 1973 according to the NYC Subway.Org! I do agree they did great work at Broad, Fulton, and Essex (which was, IMO a hodgepodge of various fuglinesses prior to renovation).Having said that, we can agree to differ on whether the IND look should have been retained elsewhere. I know I'm the only person on here who's voiced that thought, but what the hell :) Anyhow, until very recently, I agree that renovations at IND stations were sort of "off-key"- like at 42nd/8th and 59th/Columbus Circle. Even at Roosevelt Ave, they couldn't match the tile. I also don't like what they did at 34th/6th and 14th/8th. But go to Fulton Street (A/C), and you'd never know that only a year or two ago, it was "Broadway-Nassau". They did a perfect, or nearly perfect job matching the original look. The first time I saw it, it took me a few seconds to realize there'd been a change!! I hope they do that on all future IND renovations. Imagine if they re-did the Archer Avenue stations like that- wowza!! |

Ahhh yes.....Archer stations which did not age well at all. I would be up for any retroing they would do there.....its not just the looks that's bad.....but the materials sucked and didn't age well. But judging by your thought on Broad,etc....you would want them to keep the original ugly 80s look rather than retroing back to an older, look to match the rest of the line? After all that would involve making (at least the lower stations have an IND tile look) to keep with the Queens IND line look (which they did at Broad,etc...bring the stations to match the older part of the line.... :) |

You have accurately pointed out an inconsistency in my station rehab preferences!!I was proposing to do the Archer Stations in 1930s IND to be consistent with Queens Blvd., while keeping Broad, Fulton, and 8th Avenue in their original, but inconsistent (with the rest of the line) look. I guess I really just like that look. But I certainly wouldn't suggest putting it back in those stations, or in any other BMT/IRT stations. In fact, how's this Jamaica/Van Wyck, and the upper levels of Sutphin/Archer and Parsons/Archer get done in 1930s IND while the lower levels of the latter 2 stations get BRT/BMT? I know that two designs in one station would cost a fortune...but this is just a fan discussion board anyway... |

No, orange does seem to be the correct color. To me, at times when I entered the station, it looked more like a bright orangey red, that's why I wrote red in the previous post. |

Speaking of the horrible 1970s tiles, we have City Hall. The trackside walls were recently stripped down to bare concrete and pretty nice BMT-ish tiles installed. There's also considerable rehab work going on at the entrances.But it looks like the "bathroom" on some of the platform structures, like the back of the staircases and on the work rooms aren't going anyplace. I'm still kind of hoping that's only 'cause they're being left for last... |

It's ridiculous that midtown stations should undergo a second round of renovations while many outer borough stations have never undergone one.Midtown stations which have yet to undergo renovation work since 1982, the first MTA Capital Program 50th Street/CE 57th Street/F 5th Ave/7 Midtown stations which had a second round of renovation since the first 1982 MTA Capital Program: NONE As usual, WAAR. |

Who is talking about since 1982? Not me.What about all the renovations of the 1970s on the Broadway and 4th Avenue BMT? Both 5th Avenue/59 Street and Wall Street were redone twice since 1970. Remember the blue bricks at Wall Street? No station outside Manhattan was renovated twice. So I am not wrong again. Also, 57th on the F was built in 1967. So that means all but two midtown stations have been renovated, and one of them was renovated twice. Also the lower level of 59th and Lex which was built around 1962 was already renovated after only about 45 years. Many stations In the outer boroughs have not seen renovations in 80 years. Thanks for proving my point. |
