That's a tasteless response in light of the deaths in the alluded-to derailment.

So now NJT has to replace 1100 ties out of a so-called "abundance of caution". If they rebuilt the former CNJ Southern Division and finished the Waterfront Connection with the same gusto, we could have both MOM commuter service and Atlantic City service, even out of the "red-headed stepchild" of Hoboken Terminal (only takes advertising to remind NYers that it's a brief trip across the Hudson River).

Yeah, because replacing 1100 ties totally costs the same as rebuilding the former CNJ Southern Div. and finishing the Waterfront Connection.

We all know they can move their asses when they want to or have to.
I suspect a long stretch looked bad.

On the short double-track portion of the RVL near Hunter between the NEC and Conrail, there have been quite a few spot replacements of concrete ties. Some ties look cleaner, as do the ballast around them.

Unrelated question, it is hard to describe, but what is a whining noise emitted form the wheels on some stretches of track ? It sounds almost like MP54 motor humming. I hear it on the NEC and the Lehigh Line, but not the rest of the RVL ? Is it not a function sound effects of concrete ties.

Called lucky!!! The conditions that once existed in the Bronx was ridiculous, and it is a miracle there wasn't a derailment.

I am interested to see how the plastic ties plan works out. So far, I have not seen anymore installed outside of Shelter Rock Road (Danbury/Bethel).

CTA ? But that is lightweight equipment.
What about the UPRR ? Didn't they use plastic ties somewhere ?

They did the LIRR Main Line Harold - Jay around 2001 or so. Didn't they have to do 2 or 4 tracks twice because they quickly cracked ?

This is the sort of thing that makes me think life is six of one and half a dozen of the other. It isn't that concrete ties are bad, but they simply introduce a different set of problems than wooden ties. They certainly aren't the "wonder tie" that they are made out to be when they are introduced. ("Will last 50 years, cure cancer, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!")

You have to wonder about vandalism, I've seen lots of trespassing in this area.

Properly treated, wooden ties can last for 4 decades. Then again, you don't need to chop down trees to make concrete.

The Romans made concrete that has lasted 2,000 years. It can be done.

They didn't run trains over it that can weigh up to 71,000 pounds per axle, though.

They replaced the track from the west end of the grade crossing at Bay Street to the east end of the next grade crossing. Both grade crossings are relatively new and in good condition. That was certainly a reasonable limit.

I question the "two damaged ties" claim though.
