$1 surcharge on new MetroCards applies to PATH

In case anyone was wondering.

http://www.panynj.gov/path/metrocard.html

"Effective March 3, 2013, a $1.00 fee will be charged for each new MetroCard purchased at a MetroCard Vending Machine (including those at PATH stations) or station booth, or commuter rail station."

That means that the PATH 2 fare card will be $5.50 or $2.75 per trip.

Maybe PATH should go back to their own version of the farecard (non RFID)

This asinine charge is another indication of how little NYCT cares about the public. These cards probably cost $1 for a couple of thousand. I don't mind supplementing the cost but to charge $1 for this flimsy piece of garbage is well just garbage. And this business well just refill it, what about tourists?

But then again when did caring about the public ever matter to NYCT.

"what about tourists?"

It isn't so much NYCT but the parent MTA that is doing this.

Easy - they get screwed - unless they happen to find a dicarded card (that hasn't expired) and know enough to do the refill option.

When the MTA first brought up the idea of the surcharge it was estimated that it costs about 5¢ to produce per card.

I agree but to the MTA's way of thinking, a small surcharge would not be enough incentive for people to continue using/refilling the same card.

Besides they will make money (or so they think) from all the new cards purchased.

Of course what will happen now is that any advertiser who would buy space on the back of a MetroCard or both sides is going to think twice about doing so because the potential "audience" will be reduced considerably (and if they don't know that maybe they should be told).

what about tourists?

They should pay. Those who travel enough to warrant an unlimited MetroCard save money with the Unlimited. And those who put a certain amount of dollar value on their card at a time get a bonus value. So, those who live in the city get a savings too, and pass all of the price of the MetroCard, plus an extra tax, onto the tourists. I think that's fair.

When I go on vacation, I often pay more than the locals do in that I have to buy the fare media. Los Angeles, Miami to name a couple. I think Washington DC does this now too. I think New Yorkers should benefit as well.

If you are a New Yorker and are reponsible with your MetroCard, you should be happy about this fee.

If a one time $1 per up-to-4-person-family fee is considered "screwed," then I should have had a heart attack when I found out WMATA was charging me $1 extra per ride for using outdated fare media I had kept since my last visit a few years earlier. (Thankfully there wasn't more than the value a couple of rides left anyway).

That's still only a 95-cent profit. WMATA wanted basically a third of what was left on my farecards for themselves.

Though you can get me to have pity if a family of four comes in and wants to go unlimited for a week or month as they'd have to pay $4 in surcharges.

In the end, the best system is London's. Put down a deposit when you arrive, and get it refunded to you for returning the card when you leave.

5 cents for the card. What about to receive it, store it, ship it to the machines, fill the machines, keep inventory, keep accounts, and on and on and on and on and on.
Point is, nothing ever costs what it costs to buy.

Point B) what about tourists. It's a tax. Now you can pay for all that crap. same as hotel taxes, airport taxes, rental car taxes, etc. It's unaffordable to be a tourist in the USA anymore imo.

Point C) My lavendaria card costs more than that, and I'm still using it a year later. However you mentioned it was a flimsey piece of crap, and RFID. I know which ones you mean and I would actually agree, HOWEVER
since we're talking the government and regulations, they're never wrong and we can't do too much, so it sounds good! To quote Congressman Frank, you can afford it.

Honest question though, How many of these do you think you'd have to go through in a year? Or how long does that paper stay together? I've had a few from Atlanta, that I never got to use and it stayed in my wallet fine for a long time.*

* I got a "few" of them because I thought I was buying one refillable card, and instead it gave me a gaggle of RFID cards all valued at one ride.

Fewer cards will be distributed, but those that are will stay in peoples' wallets and purses longer. If advertisers are charged on a per-card basis, it is probably better for them this way, their ads will be seen for a longer time.

For small merchants, perhaps ... if they're advertising their business. However, most advertising is geared towards impulse purchases on short campaigns where you only want that ad out there for a very limited time. Those advertisers won't get their value anymore this way.

Look at it this way: the MTA needs a fare hike. There are two ways they could go about it: an additional quarter across the board (so $2.75 instead of $2.50) or this $1 surcharge on new cards which can be avoided with due diligence.

Only the disorganized, stupid or lazy should be complaining about this, because those are the people who are affected. Up here in Albany it's not uncommon to see Metrocards in people's wallets - if those of us 150 miles away can keep reusing the same card surely city residents can.

Ways to avoid the surcharge (Re: $1 surcharge on new MetroCards applies to PATH)

All this complaining about the surcharge, and you don't have to even pay it:

1. Avoid this fee by keeping and refilling your current MetroCard at any MVM or station booth.
2. You will be issued a new MetroCard at no charge if your card is expiring or damaged.
3. The new $1.00 charge will not apply to a MetroCard bought at an out-of-system vendor, reduced fare customers (seniors and customers with disabilities), users of EasyPayXpress cards, transit benefit organization customers who get their MetroCard directly from employers or their benefit providers, and customers who purchase a combination railroad/MetroCard ticket.

The punitive nature of the surcharge is designed so that people WON'T want to pay it. This is a good idea all around.

After you agree to the transfer, the MVM will eject the old card. Once you remove it, the machine will dispense a new one with your old balance on it. You don't have to complete a monetary transaction to do this, by the way. You can trade in your soon-to-expire card at an MVM or MEM without adding anything to it. If you do want to refill it, you'll have to start over at the beginning and insert the new card when prompted.

I'm sure the agency auditors had a hemorrhage until they verified the rate. :)

They DO have many nice rooms though. And you pay for them.

Nope ... Pennsylvania (a genuine flea trap) is across from NYP whereas the Mildew Plaza is up on 8th and 43.

After you agree to the transfer, the MVM will eject the old card. Once you remove it, the machine will dispense a new one with your old balance on it. You don't have to complete a monetary transaction to do this, by the way.

MVM's used to have this feature in the beginning. But I heard Metrocard collectors were abusing this feature to obtain "collectible" farecards, and the feature was disabled.
