That's precisely the reason why I dumped the pays years ago in favor of just renting the DVD or borrowing it from the library. And there's plenty of places that stream Nurse Jackie, Dexter, Breaking Bad and all that and surprise - no graffiti on it. Amusing how they wonder why folks are dropping that stuff. :)

What makes you think they are all going to go to the SAS for relief ?

It is only north of 63rd Street to 96th. The it will run down down the west side of Manhattan. At best, you'll get some of the transfers at 59th, and that's about it.

The SAS is oversold.

SAS will take Upper East Side/East Harlem riders from 4/5/6 and those that now take the M15 SBS, not just those that transfer @ 59 St. It will be welcome relief. Obviously you're not familiar with the overcrowding on any given weekday morning along Lex Ave.

More than half of the Upper East Side lives closer to 2nd Ave than to Lex.

If you work on 5th or 6th the cross-platform transfer to the F at 63rd makes sense.

If you work on Wall Street, taking the Q to 14th and transferring to the 4/5 there probably makes sense.

Still doesn't need both an N and a Q.
No SAS north of 96th, nor south of 63rd. It will do nothing for the M15.

You are obviously not aware of where people are going, or the Lex trains would empty out at 59th. Their peak load point is into 42nd.

Again the STubway is over-valued.

Many M15SBS riders are those that live east of 2 ave so yes SAS will make a big dent in SBS ridership but probably little to local M15 ridership. It would also take away some that normally go to 42 St. Many going to 42 St end up transfering for the shuttle to TS or 7 to 74/Roosevelt. For Times Sq bound riders, Q would make a one train ride. For 74/Roosevelt bound riders, F transfer @ 63 would be easier than 4/5/6 to 7.

I'd like to see South Ferry (old or new) back like anyone else but hey isn't it possible the MTA is giving the 3 year estimate to justify temporarily opening up the old loop. In reality it may take only 1.5 years but better to overestimate then complete sooner rather than give a real world estimate then finish late. Those "3-7 minute walks" to BG or Rector feel a lot longer on a snowy winter day or scorching summer day.

What portion of M15SBS riders boarding between 96th and 63rd are heading to West 42nd, as opposed to East 42nd ? There are more jobs on the east side. W

hat proportion of total M15SBS and Lex riders go to Jackson Hts as opposed to Manhattan ?

You can make a case for the Q, but not an N as well, and that would come at the expense of Astoria service which Bway Lion would be glad to just offer a W train.

I'm talking about SBS riders up to 125 St. Those with jobs along the east side like the hospitals along 60s/70s on York Ave or Bloomberg on 59 St can take Q rather than M15SBS. Also an alternative to Hunter students that may have taken SBS to 68 St and walked 2 avenues over can get off @ 63 and walk 5 streets up.

Well, I think they will rebuild anyway, but if the next storm screws over the station as badly as it did, then I'd say pull the plug on that station and just make Rector the new permanent terminal and tell people to take the 4/5/R trains for the Ferry. I dunno how many ppl generally use the 1 to the ferry, but if it helps, maybe bring back the W to help offset the crowds?

The 63rd Street connection = BROADWAY EXPRESS and via Bridge
The 60th Street connection = BROADWAY LOCAL and via Tunnel

Threat them like two separate railroads, and keep your filthy hands off of my nice interlocking levers.

Ergo ASTORIA = LOCAL

(N) if it continues to Forest Hills can run via the 63rd St tunnel as an express or via the 60th St tunnel as a LOCAL.

The NATURAL Brooklyn Terminal of the LOCAL is Ft. Hamilton.

Actually I basically agree with you.

Some time ago I proposed that N and Q trains travel Second Avenue, via the Broadway express, travel over the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn to their respective destinations. The Q would operate at all times, while N trains would operate daily, from 6am to midnight.

The W-train would restored as the Astoria to Whitehall Street local, operating daily from 6am to midnights, with additional rush hour put-ins from Canal Street to Astoria. During the midnights to 6am periods - daily - the W would be extended as a local to Coney Island replacing the N-train.

The R-train would remain as it is now. That way locals are on local tracks, and express trains run on express tracks, with no need for switching tracks. Just my thoughts.

Mike

Yeh well, we run for customers' benefit, not for the convenience of the switch tower operator's fingers. Over serving 2nd Avenue with the N at the expense of a weekday service to Astoria is not acceptable.

Running the R with not only no maintenance, but no yard at either end of the line means too much deadheading expenses. We stopped in the 80's. It was one of the outcomes of Ronan's 1967-Chrystie operation, that did not work.

I wouldn't mind QB having both the M and N lines together. A shorter R would be nice to have going to Astoria. You'd be better off running the N local since you realistically cant run more than 5 lines on QB without 'crashing' the rr. And I think it's safe to say the E F stays put as the express. M isn't going away either. You want broadway service, you'd have to kick out the other broadway line.

Ideally what I was thinking is the do this: extend the local tracks north of 57/7th up the 'ramps' and merge with the express tracks heading to 63rd. N (express) and W (local) goes to 96th/2nd av. Q and R will merge going to 60th. Set up would be similar to the CPW 59th st arrangements. W would still terminate at whitehall, but basically the only merging will happen around 57th. No more 34th st, no more Prince st merging. "All that is needed" is to lay down tracks on the barren ramps north of 57th.

This way Astoria gets their fairly consistent express line, 2nd av has 2 lines running, and the merging issue is limited to 1 spot per line.

The loop track is already in use to turn SB 1 trains from Rector St so the signal relays must be in decent condition.

The gap fillers may be the issue.

I have suggested that, but that probably is not feasible.

As I understand it, they are supposedly building a food stand where the entrance to old SF was, so this could be moot (though I do think there is going to be political pressure to re-open the old loop station if the current SF is going to be out of commission for 2-3 years as some suggest and have whatever stand that is supposed to take that space moved elsewhere).

That said, the irony is, in a few years with NTT trains coming since those likely could be programmed to automatically open just the center doors at the old SF inner loop station, that station could perhaps be reopened down the road if it became necessary since that might be easier to be made ADA-compliant.

How many arches for door openings does the inner loop SF station have, and how far apart ?

Heh. Well as long as we're rerouting the world, how about some 2nd Avenue love for the B/D/F 6th Avenue line? Damned BMT ... :)

I say recommission the loop station if it's going to take that long. Just my two cents.
