Atlantic was a complete overcrowded mess.
There was very limited announcements and MTA personnel to explain things.

Why should the F be affected at all? It goes nowhere near Dekalb and certainly doesn't interfere with turning B and D trains at 34/6. Also, why are Bs and Ds terminating at 34/6 instead of W4 St?. Additionally, if the supts really wanted to supply service, they could flex out the F service and send the Ds via the F line and up the West End through what we used to call the "back door." That way even though it might take a bit longer, passengers could remain on D trains and get to their destinations along the West End Line.

Thats problem with the Chrystie st/Manny B Cut..theres nothing you can do when a train lays down,or the line gets jacked...which is WHY there should have been a back up plan built[such as a Nassau st connector tunnel.. or the Brighton line Culver Express connector tunnels]

Chrystie st didn't solve the problem it was intended to fix, namely the unclogging of the BMT Southern Division lines.

I am impressed with how quickly the MTA got things moving again, and how rarely these major issues happen.

As someone who relied on private automobiles for the vast majority of my mobility until 2 years ago, the random nature of car travel with unpredictable traffic and frequent accident caused delays was a near-constant source of stress.

While hundreds of millions or billions could be spent on alternate connections and extra capacity, people in NYC should be thankful that we have a system that is so reliable and predictable.

Although not announced on the webpage, there were some (D)s that were sent through the Rutgers St tubes down the Culver (this is probably why some (F)s were sent via crosstown). From what I observed, these (D)s went OOS at 18 Av (and possibly other express stations along the Culver line) and took the express track to Avenue X yard.

"The fire broke out just before 4:30 p.m. on the tracks at Dekalb Avenue, drawing more than 100 firefighters to the station, the FDNY said.

The fire was under control at 6:15 p.m., and no one was injured, the FDNY said.

All trains resumed service by 7:30 p.m., but the MTA advised straphangers to expect delays into the evening."

B, D, F, Q, N, R train service has been restored with delays between Manhattan to Brooklyn after an apparent cable fire in a subway tunnel north of the DeKalb Avenue train station in Downtown Brooklyn.

The DeKalb Avenue station is a hub, which is why so many trains were affected.

It was so hot, so smoky down there, that some firefighters were overcome by it, needed oxygen when they got out, and all of them needed to cool off after a fire ripped through the afternoon rush hour.

t seemed like everyone was trying to get somewhere they couldn't.

Every line that connects Brooklyn and Manhattan was affected, a couple of them closed down, so it was a mess during the busiest part of the day.

The MTA had people outside the closed stations to give advice on rerouting, which didn't really make people any happier.

Brooklyn bound commuters couldn't get out and Manhattan bound commuters couldn't get in.

All the while, firefighters were battling a blaze that was so deep in the tunnel, they could barely see.

Fire marshalls are investigating to determine if the fire was intentionally set.

The commute for Wednesday morning should be back to normal.

(CBS-2) Major problems at Dekalb Av - (B) (D) (N) (Q) (R) trains

A fire that caused cables to burn in a small manhole space several hundred feet into a subway tunnel made for many commuter headaches on Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze broke out around 4 p.m. in a signal and communication cable room not far from the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan Bridge and near the Dekalb Avenue station in Brooklyn, according to MTA spokesman Adam Lisburg.

It sent smoke billowing through the tunnel. We had to shut down service on the B and D lines so that people wouldn’t be breathing that smoke going through there and so firefighters could get in and access it,” he told reporters, including 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon.

There were numerous delays and service changes on the B, D, F, N Q and R lines between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Firefighters got to the fire on a light rail train, traveling 600 feet into the tunnel, where FDNY Brooklyn Borough Commander James Leonard said it was very hot and smoky.

“We were able to ascertain where the fire was, we just were not sure exactly what was on fire,” Leonard said.

It turned out to be cables in the manhole, but according to the MTA, no critical power cables were affected. Officials were able to work around the burned out space to get service restored not long after the fire was out.

“We were able to both identify the source of the fire and figure out a way to work around all the equipment that was damaged,” Lisberg said.

The fire was extinguished around 6:15 p.m. and service was mostly restored by 7:30 p.m.

If the Brighton to Culver connection had been built, it would have utilized the Fkln Shtl tracks N/O PPk to connect to a new tunnel to be built under Prospect Pk which would have connected to the Culver express tracks. That was at a time when serious consideration was being given to abandoning the Fkln Shtl entirely.

That defeats the purpose of what I was saying. The Ds could have operated between 36/4 and 205 operating via the Culver to Stillwell and up the West End to 36 St and return the same way.

I'v been saying that for years. If the Fkln Shtl had been rebuilt to accommodate 600 ft trains, the Q service could have operated between Stl and Fkln so that passengers could transfer from/to C trains there.

"Firefighters got to the fire on a light rail train". Did they borrow one from Hoboken? Seriously, if the power was turned off, what did the firefighters use to get to the fire? 600 feet is just one full size train length. Why was there no service on the IRT at Atlantic Ave? (as one womewn complained about?)

The IRT was normal. They probably kept power on that one track for the fire taxi to get in there, and then removed power.

This is where I would shorten the (Q) to 4-5 cars (300' trains) and have such trains go to the Botanic Garden (S) station (Prospect Park-bound platform), terminating where people can go to/from the (2)/(3)/(4)/(5) to/from Manhattan. The regular (S) would be reduced to a single train operating from the Franklin Avenue-bound track at Botanic Garden to Franklin Avenue.

I believe the Botanic Garden Station is at least 300' long and that's why I would do this in a situation like that.

Absolutely:

I would have used the "backdoor" way myself and for this purpose (and others) made Coney Island a through station instead of a terminal, possibly also extending some (F) trains to 9th Avenue via the West End..

Actually, in Brooklyn I would have made the (Q) 300' trains and had it run from Coney Island-Botanic Garden (on the Prospect Park-bound platform with the trains longer if it can handle more than 300') while the regular (S) would be a single train between Prospect Park and Botanic Garden. That would allow people to use the 2/3/4/5 to Franklin Avenue and switch there for Coney Island.

Not to mention in about 15-20 years when it's time for the Hippos to be retired, what then? If MTA doesn't want to get any more 75 foot cars, what do they use? 2 60-foot cars is probably not enough capacity, and 4 60-footers won't fit (maybe platform lengthening to 250 feet?)

Really stupid idea on the part of hte planners. Or maybe they thought the Frankie will just shut down along w/ the Hippos.

From what I understand, that is exactly what happened. Some B/D's were sent via the F line. That's the reason for some F's via the G line. West 4th and Jay St was doing extra work along with Dekalb, City Hall, Murphy, and Stillwell Towers.......

It really shouldn't have made much difference since S/O Bergen the G ad F line merge anyhow so you would still have congestion.
