The first part of the run, up to about 96th, definitely reminded me of the good old days. We were doing at least 40 mph; I timed that portion at 3:08 vs 3:16-3:18 on contemporary equipment. I recall that even the R-10s slowed up a bit past 96th. We crawled once we reached 116th, and that's what killed it. Sill, we reached 125th in about 6:40. |

Borthbound, you have the swingover and the downhill, and it's always been timer city from just south of 116 anyway. Smells like about a 40 second loss over what I remember, used to do that in 6 flat. |

I wish I'd timed at least one jaunt on the R-10s; I even wore a watch with a second hand back then, for Pete's sake! The old timers took that downhill nicely - no brakes applied going past 103rd. Just out of curiosity, is there a quick way to tell which end is which? Just before we got going from Court St., one of the crew came up front to release the handbrake; the lever was up front on 1300. |

When running them, the compressor switch was on the 2 end, the heaters (3 of them) was on the 1 end. That's how you could tell for sure. Most of them still had a decal on the bulkhead next to the emergency cord outside the cab with 1 and 2 respectively. To my best memory, the handbrake was on the motor truck which was the 2 end, which was usually on the points. That I'm not absolutely sure of after all these years, but I sure do remember by switch panels behind me because you always had to check that your compressor switch was on or you'd have a really bad trip. :) |

That CPW express jaunt in December of 1969 on a prewar D was a no-headlight ride. Nothing compares to seeing I-beams reduced to silhouettes with the only lighting provided by tunnel lights. Not all of the R-4s got headlights; in fact, 401 and 484 still have clamp-on lights at floor level when either one operates as the lead motor on museum trips. Of the surviving R-1s, 381 has headlights while 100 has clamp-on lights. Not sure about 103. |

Trip Planner is saying an hour and a half on a normal subway train. However, since the Nostalgia Train will not be making a lot of stops going back (only 5 or 6), I would say about an hour and 15 minutes. |

One of my favorite variations on that theme was 168th between the IND and IRT ... IRT was still pumping their bulbs with 25 Hz while the IND was 60. At the demarc point down below the IND's bulbs really showed off the flickering of the IRT's bulbs apparently fed from the rotaries up at Dyckman. :) |

Since the train is headed for 207th St. Yard anyway, why not let people stay on board if they wish for a nice express run the way it was in the good old days - a DASH! Maybe they'll do it with the Holiday Special if it runs this December. I wonder if anyone has any runby footage of that train howling ass past 81st. n/b.When Bill Wall announced two weeks ago that 175th would be the last stop, all I could think was, whoa! I'm gonna get to ride along that express dash on the old timers again after nearly 43 years! Biggest no-brainer in the history of earth - I was staying on that train! |
