That CPW express jaunt in December of 1969 on a prewar D was a no-headlight ride. Nothing compares to seeing I-beams reduced to silhouettes with the only lighting provided by tunnel lights. Not all of the R-4s got headlights; in fact, 401 and 484 still have clamp-on lights at floor level when either one operates as the lead motor on museum trips. Of the surviving R-1s, 381 has headlights while 100 has clamp-on lights. Not sure about 103.
