I heard that one. Sounds like a bad joke, doesn't it? (How would the brake tests that they do on the MLVs fit in with a mixed set?)IINM, there is still a page on NJTransit.com that claims interoperability with single-level cars too. |

I guess they would just inspect the brakes according to the multilevel schedule, even if "normal" cars are mixed in... |

Hi Paul, I make cameo appearances here every now and then! BTW, I'm back in Raritan as of 10/14. One round trip, MMC, no O/T. Get done at a semi reasonable hour...weekends off. |

Here's a deranged idea: how much would it cost to get the Silverliner 2's and 3's from the scrapper, fix them up a bit, and run them on the NEC? At least until NJT gets their act together about their next MU cars. |

Old cars never flow into NJT; they flow out, though. SEPTA, Utah Frontrunner and Metrolink running Comet Is, AMT with Comet IBs, that kind of stuff. Plus NJT crews are most likely not wanting to deal with all-manual doors, especially since the last stuff that had them was the RDCs (the NJCL old cars including IIRC the "Jersey Builders" got retired with the GG1s). |

I can't find the Tech Spec now, but the old 2005 one from SEPTA stated that the SLVs were to be equipped to handle 12kv 25hz and 12kv 60hz as built, with provisions for 25kv 60hz use at a later date with automatic tap changers. |

Yeah, I know it was an extreme long shot, but they seem like the most reasonably available MU's that can run on the NEC on short notice, even if they are kind of rickety. But at least they don't seem to be suffering from body rot or anything really structural (see: redbirds). |

Those cars are well beyond their useful lives. They need to be allowed to die with dignity.Remember, NJT scrapped the Arrow II's even though they were less than 25 years old. |

Interesting idea, but remember that even if the IIs and IIIs were in whole pieces and in running condition, the FRA will no longer allow them to operate in service without extreme modifications. That's why SEPTA had to retire them so quickly, even though their end-of-June retirement resulted in a summertime car shortage.Besides, they are much older than the Arrow IIIs anyway :). |

Why didn't they? Were the cars in that bad of shape?I recall hearing that SEPTA was interested in purchasing some of them to complement the Silverliner IV fleet (and I guess to get rid of some of the Blueliners), but the Arrow IIs were in such bad shape that they decided against it (other than the two cars for the work train, of course). |

I've heard anecdotes about leaking roofs, broken HVAC and all sorts of other stuff. Sounds like typical MMC hi-jinks (they opened in 1987; they make the Elizabethport shops look good); plenty of anecdotal stuff about them not maintaining trains, even today. AFAICS, if the Silverliner IVs lasted as long as they did (never mind their recently-retired predecessors!), so could the Arrow IIs have, as well as the newer Arrow IIIs. |

That's your opinion. The NEC schedules are pathetically slow with ALP/MLV consist now taking a full half hour longer to make the trip between New York and Trenton than the Arrows did 15 + years ago. Amtrak does not like these slug trains on their RR either, so came up with the idea of MPC's to move the MLV's along faster.Like it or not, NJT is stuck with 436 MLV's for 35- 40 years. |

The only hope for 2nd hand cars for NJT is M-6's off the New Haven, and retrofitted with 25 cycles transformers. |

They were supposedly in rough shape and in need of a rebuilding. The need for MU's on the Morris and Essex lines declined when Midtown Direct took over (they couldn't run to NYP). They were essentially replaced by the second round of ALP-44's and the Comet IV's. |

The need for MUs on the Morris and Essex lines declined when Midtown Direct took over (they couldn't run to NYP)That's a dilemma that NJT themselves created (and Amtrak in part, but mostly NJT due to their choices in capital purchases). Amtrak of course was going to change the PRR's former electrification to 25kV 60Hz, and NJT rebuilt the Lackawanna lines to match that; then Amtrak backed off. But even though NJT did rebuild their Arrow IIIs, they left out automatic variable-tap transformers, which the ALP-44s that they had gotten before the Arrow rebuild did have. So it's technically not measured by "need for MUs" but utility of MUs, and self-imposed by NJT at that. |
