The only lines that NEED MU's are the M&E/Montclair-Boonton trains which run to Hoboken, and the Summit/MSU Midtown Directs. These trains hardly need the extra capacity a MLV provides. There is no need for MU's to run on the NEC, they only do because it's the only route out of NYP that does not require a phase change somewhere and there are far more Arrow III's than needed to provide the services in and out of Hoboken.Purchase 200 or so powered single level cars (the original Arrow IV concept), make then capable of doing phase changes on the fly and use then exclusively on the Morris and Essex lines. |
