The D already had a means to connect to the other side of the East River from the lower level so there would be no need for any other means of connection. I come from that part of Manhattan and the topography of the area basically mandates that trains bound for the Bronx come from the lower level since the 155 ST/8 Av station is at a much lower level than the 155 St/St Nicholas Av station on the A/AA/C route. |

Not only that but when I was a M/M on the RR in 1970, there was no evidence of any construction on the street level at that location which would have been the case if a completely new tunnel extension had to be constructed. What I don't understand is why tracks were not laid in that tunnel infrastructure so that R trains could be laid up there instead of on the S/B exp tk between 36 and 59 St. |

I don't think the widening off the N/B lcl tk N/O Nevins has anything to do with the 4 Av subway but rather a possible connection to the Manny B. The provision for the 4 Av subway is/was between atlantic and Nevins and I mentioned in another post was covered over when the tracks between Atlantic and Nevins were reconfigured circa 1960. |

Posted by Elkeeper on Sat Aug 4 11:43:55 2012, in response to Re: Unbuilt Stuff, posted by Lou From Middletown NY on Fri Aug 3 07:27:06 2012. I really blame the Manhattan El directors, who sat on the Interboro's Board. Everyone hated Jay Gould's Manhattan Elevated, before the IRT leased it, and the same directors were now part of the IRT's Board of Directors. Looking back, it probably would have been better for the IRT to have had joint elevated service with the MER in the Bronx, perhaps, similar to the later joint Astoria/Flushing service with the BMT. The Interboro never got the money back that it had invested into the MER, before, during, and after the Dual Contracts of 1913. The Manhattan els started to lose ridership after 1918, culminating in the IRT's receivership in 1932, during the Depression. Even during receivership, the directors resisted any efforts by the IRT to curtail any el service. And remember, when LaGuardia finally did get to shut down and purchase the 6th ave el in 1938, he paid the Manhattan bondholders, not the IRT. Even so, a few of the MER directors were not pleased with the price and sued the City. These lawsuits were not settled until 5/27/43, some 3 years after Unification. |

In effect the operation of 6 and 9 Av el trains on the Jerome Line and the 2 and 3 Av el trains on the West Farms and Wh Pl Rd lines was a joint operation between the Manhattan Rwy and the IRT Subway Division. The main reason for there being 2 separate divisions was primarily due to employee/union concerns which I addressed in another post in another thread somewhere in this forum. |
