MTA Metro-North Railroad To Test Smartphone Ticketing This Summer

MTA Metro-North Railroad, working with transit mobile ticketing specialists Masabi US Ltd., will begin testing a smartphone app that will let people buy their train tickets anywhere, anytime and never have to hold a piece of paper.

This technology will allow customers to use today's phones to quickly and securely buy and display electronic tickets thereby avoiding queues at ticket machines or having to use cash on-board trains.

"We are as excited to begin testing the next generation ticket selling technology as we were when we introduced ticket vending machines a quarter of a century ago," said Metro-North President Howard Permut. "Our customers adapted quickly to TVMs and the machines became the preferred way to buy tickets. The latest test is intended to ensure that the newest technology will be equally easy to use, as well as secure and reliable."

During the pilot, railroad employees will act as users and will be able to download the free app to their iPhone, Android or Blackberry phones. Through the app, these users can buy any type of ticket, one-way, round trip, 10-trip, monthly etc., with any origin and destination using their credit or debit cards to make the purchase.

The time and date stamped electronic ticket shows up on the purchaser's phone screen as a secure image that a conductor can validate visually. The electronic ticket also shows as a bar code that can be scanned by a conductor's hand held device to verify that the barcode is valid.

"Smartphones have the potential to transform the public transit systems across the United States. Passengers will be able to quickly and easily find, buy and display tickets on their phones wherever they are without having to worry about carrying cash or waiting in line, thereby providing a better commuter experience," said Giacomo Biggiero, Director of Masabi US Ltd. "We're delighted to be working with the MTA."

Next month, railroad staff will begin testing the mobile ticketing technology including a time measurement study to compare the new method to current on-board ticket selling, collection and inspection. Efficacy and anti-fraud measures also will be tested. If successful, Metro-North will seek to expand the program to its customers.

Masabi US Ltd also is working with Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to introduce smartphone rail ticketing system this fall. Masabi's technology also supports the future move to contactless "near-field communications" technology when these handsets become more widely available, allowing tickets to be checked or gates opened by simply tapping a compatible device against a reader.

The company's technology also is used by 13 of the UK's transit agencies, including Virgin Trains, Cross Country Trains, Chiltern Railways and thetrainline.com. For more information see www.masabi.com/us

If the software is written properly, GPS will know where their phone WAS and at what time. Same for the train. Should be interesting to see if the developers already figured this out. :)

I don't think we want phones tracking people like that. Wasn't there already some controversy about iPhones keeping records of location vs. time without the user's consent, and didn't they decide not to do that anymore? Or was it Android? They both had some similar (but not identical) issues along those lines, though I don't remember all the details. I hope it is not actually possible to do what you suggest.

They all do. And yes, piece of cake. If the operating system provides a feature, the code can be written to bypass the "may I please?" Dealing with computer privacy and security violations is what I do for a living.

And if the developer wants to be "polite" and actually ask, then the provider can say "no GPS, no sale ... cash rate" ...

When I was working in the city, I would have a holder for my work id. Outside was clear plastic, I would put my ticket in it so the conductor could see it and not wake me if I dozed off.

Under the new system, how would a conductor know if a ticket had been purchased?

I can see it now.......

1. If the app crashes, the passenger thinks of some cockamamie story on how they tried to purchase their ticket, had it purchased, but the app crashed and now they do not have it. And the Conductor gets tha blame for the crash (as we get blamed for EVERYTHING!!)

2. Having someone forward the one purchased ticket to a few friends and then they all get to use it (aka, take one ride, pass it around!! I sure hope they took measures to prevent this.....probably not!!)

3. Claiming how they purchased their ticket, but then their phone died, and if we can just let them go.

4. When a card gets declined, blame our software or app, or as usual blame the Conductor or crew members, rather than admit they maxed out their card, or used a debit card linked to an overdrawn bank account.

5. Purchase a disablity/senior fare, and when asked to show proof, they present a scan or cell pic of their (or should I say supposedly their own) disability card or proof.

6. Much as Dutchrailbut said, work your way thru an understaffed train (I will use a Stamford Local), have a passenger who boarded at Stamford, but not be reached until Larchmont, and the person then purchases a Larchmont-GCT ticket.

7. Do a "one-fare-sweep" train like #1570, purchase a GCT to East Norwalk ticket, move about the train because their destination is not East Norwalk, buit actually New Haven!!

Aye dios mio........"technology"!!! X-P

I weep for the day that technology becomes rendered useless......what will humanity do to survive??

Slowly and surely, the end of humanity in railroading begins!!! Fare collection methods like this, TVMs, remote control switching (freight), CBTC, "Robotrains" (AirTrain, etc.) are just the beginning! But I guess in some ways we should only blame ourselves, us the transit/rail folks!! Had the vast number of screw-ups among us been doing our jobs properly ALL THE TIME (i.e., not sleeping, not operating while heavily distracted, being more diligent to duty, etc.), agencies and companies would not have undertaken looking for technology to do what we, as humans and railroaders/transit pros, should be doing properly. :-(

Fares will be collected on the platforms.

Swipe in and you are charged for a ride to GCT. Swipe off sooner and the charge is reduced.

Swipe in at GCT and be charged for a ride to Boston, swipe off sooner and you are charged less.

Been used in Japan since the '60s, probly more for all I know. It works. I tried to get off a train early so that I could walk back to the base by a different route, but the station agent, trying to be helpful put me back on the train telling me that I was not at the correct stop yet. My Japanese was not sufficient to discuss the issue.

The railroad SHOULD be blamed if the app is so poorly-designed that it crashes.

2. Having someone forward the one purchased ticket to a few friends and then they all get to use it (aka, take one ride, pass it around!! I sure hope they took measures to prevent this.....probably not!!)

I accidentally hit post too early. Here goes the whole post:

1. If the app crashes, the passenger thinks of some cockamamie story on how they tried to purchase their ticket, had it purchased, but the app crashed and now they do not have it. And the Conductor gets tha blame for the crash (as we get blamed for EVERYTHING!!)

The railroad SHOULD be blamed if the app is so poorly-designed that it crashes.

2. Having someone forward the one purchased ticket to a few friends and then they all get to use it (aka, take one ride, pass it around!! I sure hope they took measures to prevent this.....probably not!!)

LOL! You obviously don't know how smartphone ticketing (in those areas where it is already used, like movie tickets) works.

3. Claiming how they purchased their ticket, but then their phone died, and if we can just let them go.

How would this be any different from "I lost my ticket?"

4. When a card gets declined, blame our software or app, or as usual blame the Conductor or crew members, rather than admit they maxed out their card, or used a debit card linked to an overdrawn bank account.

I'm fairly certain policy will require the ticket to be purchased before the conductor comes to collect.

5. Purchase a disablity/senior fare, and when asked to show proof, they present a scan or cell pic of their (or should I say supposedly their own) disability card or proof.

Now you're reaching.

6. Much as Dutchrailbut said, work your way thru an understaffed train (I will use a Stamford Local), have a passenger who boarded at Stamford, but not be reached until Larchmont, and the person then purchases a Larchmont-GCT ticket.

See 4. This is a legitimate concern, but unfortunately you've decided to make it 6th behind some Luddite arguments.

Aye dios mio........"technology"!!! X-P

I weep for the day that technology becomes rendered useless......what will humanity do to survive??

Humanity won't survive. You do realize that the world's current population is supported SOLELY by modern technology and that if the last 250 years of technology (the industrial age) were wiped out tomorrow, billions of people would die. As someone who lives in one of the most technology advanced countries, you would die as well (and so would I), but if it weren't for the industrial revolution, we'd have never been born either.

No. Unlike train automation and stuff like that which doesn't really benefit passengers directly, this does and I am looking forward to it. It has nothing to do with employees screwing up.

Not any more than Microsoft should be blamed for your computer crashing when your RAM is on the fritz...

Plus a lot of phone companies will load up the phone with crap. Maybe there won't be enough memory for a simple ticketing app to run properly...

I know not all railroad employees are bad, but it doesn't take too many to foul it up for the good guys. And much of the job is essentially simple; it's just a matter of going and doing it.

Last night on the LIRR the ticket collector punched out both the E and W on my ten-trip west of Jamaica, so I figured he was done with me and wouldn't bother me again. He came along later after Jamaica and I said, "you got me." He said, "we check them again after Jamaica." I had to bite my tongue or else I probably would have been thrown off the train. I've been riding the LIRR for fifteen years-- I know full well that he's supposed to check after Jamaica, but why on Earth did he punch both the E and W west of Jamaica? Why did he have to improvise or be creative? It's a simple job-- just do it the way the book says and no one will get upset. It's these guys that make the suits long for automated fare collection. And the diligent, conscientious collectors who just diid their jobs the way they were supposed to get laid off along with all the rest...
