WMATA- FAIL?

Just got word that as of 2:41pm - ALL WMATA trains are holding in their stations due to a "systemwide computer failure". Not sure if this is ongoing or not, may want to follow up later. No trains between stations so the release says.

Terrible. For being quite clearly the nations second most successful rapid transit system, they sure do have lots of fail. I was in a similar situation yesterday on the blue line, but that was just one line.

Metrorail service restored following computer issue

Metrorail service has been restored on all lines following an earlier computer system problem.

The issue began shortly after 2 p.m. As a precaution, trains were held in the nearest station until the computer issue was resolved.

The cause of the problem is under investigation.

Customers may experience residual delays as normal rail service is restored.

Someone was hit by a train at El Segundo and trains were being single tracked at rush hour. We had to wait for several minutes at all of the stops south of Washington and then waited for maybe 20-25 minutes at 103rd.

Due to the issue related to the Fort Totten wreck of 06 22 2009 and the fact that the hardware failure that caused that wreck has not been fully replaced system wide. This is a cover their ass deal.

When all of the line side hardware is functioning properly to designed specification the railroad can be operated without the need for Central Control.

According to the AP, the 3-year old $20M central computer system that
monitors the position of every train in the Washington, D.C., Metrorail
system failed on the morning of 24 Sep 1999. The backup involved personnel
with walkie-talkies along 96 miles of track monitoring trains. As a result,
the morning startup was delayed by half an hour.

[The cause was not identified. But this was reportedly the first time in
23 years that the start of daily service was delayed!
"A graphics generating device for Metro's finicky central computer
system froze about 3:20 a.m., sending Metro managers racing to fix it
before the scheduled start of daily service at 5:30 a.m. But they
couldn't restore it until 5:46 a.m., which meant normal passenger
service didn't begin rolling until about 6:15 a.m." -- resulting in
45-minute delays to start the day. "Last fall, the system crashed
several times during rush hour, including one episode similar to
yesterday's when computer-generated views of sections of the system were
blacked out for nearly two hours. In the 15 months after the system was
installed by McLean-based BDM International, it crashed 50 times."

Remember when Queensboro Master Tower was brand new? Multiple failures and total shutdowns, effecting the 7, Astoria and the QBL IND virtually every day.

Well, that sounds a little different. In Washington, the equipment f'ed up (probably Windows-based :-)), but for you, it was a passenger-related incident. In NYC, for a 2-track line, we wouldn't even have gotten single-tracking.

Well, that sounds a little different. In Washington, the equipment f'ed up (probably Windows-based :-)), but for you, it was a passenger-related incident. In NYC, for a 2-track line, we wouldn't even have gotten single-tracking.

WMATA's (ROCS) Rail Operation Computer System does not run on Microsoft operating systems.

Hell I don't even think any of the hardware has Intel x86 type processors in them. I think the (RTU)s Remote Terminal Units in train control rooms use a RISC based hardware.

Not sure.

WMATA's first generation Central Control computer was I believe a Burroughs B7700. They had two of them, one to run the railroad and one for data processing. If the one running the railroad crapped the bed the one normally tasked with data processing could be switched to running the railroad.

Hah, BART, of course, had pseudo Westinghouse computers (GE ProDaks w/Westinghouse de4cals0. They are long gone--BART IINM is on a third or fourth generation of machines as it approaches the 40th anniversary of service.

... even if somehow having a conductor/motorman setup would have helped (it wouldn't, you'd have to completely redo the entire signal system), failures like this barely cost WMATA any money. It may have cost passengers and businesses massive amounts of money when wasted time / opportunites are accounted for, but that is not WMATA's problem. Even if events like this occurred annually, adding more staff to prevent them would not be a fiscally sound decision.

What could possibly cost money? Here's an overestimate:
-3 hours of OT for everyone on staff at the time
-3 hours of a few consultants looking at the system
-3 hours of absolutely no one paying fares.

Do you think that would cost more than even 2 weeks of paying an extra crew member per train?

I know that *all too well*... but consultants do get overtime (albeit not at time and a half) since those are hours billable to the "client" (in this case WMATA)... but either way it was during the work day so the computer folk probably had to put aside some long term project work to deal with this issue, with no extra hours...

Yep ... know the rules well after all these years. That's why our folks average a 30 hour work week and get paid for 40 in order to be fair when the rare "all hands on deck" call goes out. :)

Doesn't work that way for most others tho' ...

Incorrect. WMATA's signal system is nearly identical to what NYCT has, the primary difference being there is no signal lights at the boundaries of the blocks. Speed command are displayed on the operators console in lieu of track side signals.

In order to accommodate a motorman and conductor the rolling stock would have to be modified to allow the conductor to open and close the doors, if the purpose of having a conductor to open and close doors is what is had in mind.

Metro resolves computer glitch
Work continues to make computer system more reliable

Metro has fixed the computer glitch that impacted weekend rail service, the agency announced today.

The cause was determined to be a failed module in an information management network device. Once the computer module – about the size of a pizza box – was replaced in the early morning hours before the start of train service, the errors that had occurred in the system stopped.

“While we have confidence that the immediate issue has been resolved, our work must and will continue to make this system more robust and to improve its reliability for our customers,” said David Kubicek, Metro Deputy General Manager for Operations.

The computer problem on Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning affected an information management system that allows controllers in Metro's Rail Operations Control Center to see where trains are on a dynamic map and to remotely control switches. All safety systems that keep trains properly spaced remained fully operational during both occurrences.

Metro rail service operated normally this morning. However, Metro is again advising customers that the extreme heat predicted for later today could trigger speed restrictions that would slow trains during the afternoon and evening hours. Also, for the safety of its customers and employees, Metro will continue to allow water to be consumed aboard trains and buses today.
