That's not what I said, because those RR qualify them on both. But to have the requirement that they hold a Federal Certificate when in some instances moving less people then on a subway train is just gravy for the employee. More power to them, just the way things ended up.

Yes that would make sense. If you ban transverse cabs, engineers wouldn't have the room to text or read newspapers.

Although I have seen the term "conductor" used to describe a streetcar operator in Castilian Spanish, I have seen references in Spanish on this side of the pond that describe motorman as "motoristas" and other train operators as "operadores."

I agree, however, I notice that on NYCT, that rule is often not enforced especially on lines that use R-46s and 68s. I haven't noticed too many incidents of window covering on NTTs just yet. I have seen incidents of T/Os hanging articles of clothing or utility bags over the cab door windows on some NTTs and R-62s and while the T/O may argue that he/she needs a place to hang such items, that is just an excuse to do and end run around the rule prohibiting covering the window.

Actually, M/N will probably reissue the bulletin prohibiting the glass from being covered just to insure that their engineers don't commit such violations.

The cab doors on the M-7s and I would imagine the M-8s as well can be closed off to corner cabs like the Multis could and the R-62s can, so all that it would take to implement such an operation would be to issue a bulletin requiring the cabs to be closed in the corner configuration.

In the tunnels the LIRR travels the passengers can get out the side of the train. on MNCR there is no way to get out of side of a train. leaving front and rear door as only option.

Although we did see him lift his head after each automated announcement we couldn't see his eye movements from the rear camera angle. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume (yes I did see that Odd Couple about "assume") that he was shifting his eyes often and watching the track a lot more than we saw in the video.

The M-7 has a covenient coat hanger 9away from door) and a seat to put your bag on (also away from window)
on MNCR there is no excuuse to block the window in any way.

Well, there *are* tinted windows on the subway, mostly they have a special window that does not allow a passenger to see into the operator's position but you can see out the front window. The view is somewhat distorted which I have used to artistic effect.

There are transit/rail systems that do not have a forward view. BART comes to mind.

By rules, at no time is any window in the cab supposed to be covered over in order to prevent views into the cab. The windows are to be kept obstruction free to allow passengers to be able to locate crew members in the event of anything, not to mention the crew must be available to the passengers at all times on a revenue train. The TA certainly does have similar policy.

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/metro-north-engineer-windows-covered--158326065.html

Apparently Metro North stated here it is NOT illegal to block the windows

Posters, including a Today in New York advertisement, were taped to the windows of driving cabs on some Metro-North trains Saturday

Days after a train engineer was suspended after he was caught on camera reading while at the controls, NBC 4 New York has found some windows looking into the where the engineers work have been covered up.

Posters, including a Today in New York advertisement, were seen taped to the windows of some driving cabs on Metro-North trains Saturday.

While the MTA condemns driving while distracted, MTA officials say there is nothing wrong with this kind of privacy. In a statement, Metro-North said the company "does not have a policy that either prohibits or encourages train crew members from papering over or otherwise obscuring interior cab windows."

An MTA conductor who was spotted with a covered-up window declined to speak NBC 4 New York.

Passengers, however, were more vocal.

"It doesn't make sense. This kind of conduct shouldn't be allowed," said commuter Teresa Kirby.

The MTA first came under fire on Wednesday when obtained cell phone video showing an engineer reading the paper as he drove a rush-hour train into Grand Central.

The MTA said the behavior was "obviously not acceptable."
