On NJT, Metro North, and LIRR, all locomotive engineers are qualified to run locomotives and do so when that equipment is used. While M-8's or Arrow MU's don't have actual locomotives, the control car of each is considered to be one.

On an M8 he's a Motorman, just that that union has fought to keep the title of engineer

So according to your logic, if an M-8 set breaks down and a diesel set is used as a rescue train, the person who operated the M-8 is not qualified to operate the diesel engine, right?
