Funny. 25 years ago, Claire Shulman was quite warm to the idea of building the connection. The idea floated then was for a stop at Metropolitan and another at either Fleet or Yellowstone, which would have significantly cut the schlep to/from QB for a lot of people to the south and west who were stuck with the buses on Woodhaven, getting to the Q23 to Continental, hoofing, or getting a lift. AFAIK it never got beyond the discussion stage. Cord Meyer wasn't interested in that part of town since it was low-density residential and historic with zero chance of building up...their interests were the core at Continental and down at Metropolitan which were capable of much greater revenue and prestige (and getting MTA to build Yellowstone Junction to funnel the super-express into Continental, not provide Rockaway service). So, without a big real estate push, there wasn't anything to spur further interest. The FH Gardens and Russell Sage groups didn't have enough clout on their own. |

Reactivating an existing rail line is certainly cheaper than building a brand new one, and MTA spends billions on their capital program every year. They could very well end up building one or both of the lines you mention: if the political will ever gains traction. The current crop of Mega-projects under constructiom had to overcome all the hurdles you mentioned. |

The Crescent people can be obstructionist but the bigger complainers will be anyone who illegally built up/onto the ROW. F* them. Fine them for having used the land for free all these years. Turning that into a greenway will turn out to be a horrendous mistake. Restore the ROW/structure for eventual return to service as subway *NOT* LIRR. Maybe allow for bicycle and ped use until it's connected to the QB mainline...that would be a good 20-30 years out. Build the station shells, mount the signal masts, lay the rails and put removable decking over them to allow for maintenance...and be a constant reminder that it will be part of the subway. Be real creative and slap on a "if you obstruct, you will be f*ed dry with an assessment for preventing service." |

The issue of having rapid transit serving areas beyond the existing footprint is one of those that oscillates every 5-10 years. Right now, the overly-green types like Ms. Koslowitz are running their mouths, and deliberately concealing the detrimental long-term effects a greenway will have over converting it to a rapid transit extension. Eventually, she will be replaced by someone who wants to truly be green, grow mass transit, and get more cars off the roads.Since MTA already owns the ROW, they should at the very least go after those who have been illegally encroaching on it for the last 50 years. Clear the debris, do an end-to-end assessment of its condition and come up with some estimates for restoring it to rail-ready condition. Shore it up some, say from Union Turnpike to Yellowstone Blvd or Fleet Street, lay down removable decking, and give people a temporary walk/bikeway. Then, as money comes along, lay tracks, signals, build a couple of station shells. Eventually, tie it into the QB mainline as envisioned in 1929. Make it a goal to have Rockaway service via Queens Blvd a reality by the QB line's centennial. Once people realize subway service is within reach, mark my word, they'll demand it happen sooner. |

Well DUH!!The point was never say never. While the scale of the project is not comparable, the "never happen" is completely relevant. The rockaway Branch is far from an impossibility of return, unlike other lines such as the Whitestone branch, or Evergreen branch. THOSE are "NEVER a glimmer" of a chance of happening. The Rockaway Branch, is completely possible. |
