The issue of having rapid transit serving areas beyond the existing footprint is one of those that oscillates every 5-10 years. Right now, the overly-green types like Ms. Koslowitz are running their mouths, and deliberately concealing the detrimental long-term effects a greenway will have over converting it to a rapid transit extension. Eventually, she will be replaced by someone who wants to truly be green, grow mass transit, and get more cars off the roads.

Since MTA already owns the ROW, they should at the very least go after those who have been illegally encroaching on it for the last 50 years. Clear the debris, do an end-to-end assessment of its condition and come up with some estimates for restoring it to rail-ready condition. Shore it up some, say from Union Turnpike to Yellowstone Blvd or Fleet Street, lay down removable decking, and give people a temporary walk/bikeway. Then, as money comes along, lay tracks, signals, build a couple of station shells. Eventually, tie it into the QB mainline as envisioned in 1929. Make it a goal to have Rockaway service via Queens Blvd a reality by the QB line's centennial. Once people realize subway service is within reach, mark my word, they'll demand it happen sooner.
