Funny. 25 years ago, Claire Shulman was quite warm to the idea of building the connection. The idea floated then was for a stop at Metropolitan and another at either Fleet or Yellowstone, which would have significantly cut the schlep to/from QB for a lot of people to the south and west who were stuck with the buses on Woodhaven, getting to the Q23 to Continental, hoofing, or getting a lift. AFAIK it never got beyond the discussion stage. Cord Meyer wasn't interested in that part of town since it was low-density residential and historic with zero chance of building up...their interests were the core at Continental and down at Metropolitan which were capable of much greater revenue and prestige (and getting MTA to build Yellowstone Junction to funnel the super-express into Continental, not provide Rockaway service). So, without a big real estate push, there wasn't anything to spur further interest. The FH Gardens and Russell Sage groups didn't have enough clout on their own. |
