But the same could be said for the removal of Conductors or Token Booth Clerks.

It had seemed for quite some time now that the MTA management has much more interest in reducing the workers despite safety/lawsuit concerns.

I remember a high level position in stations that Jay created right after they layed off a bunch of clerks. This high level person was going to "improve service to customers".

What I would argue is that the person in the booth could call before there is a problem, i.e. kids or others hanging around in the station waiting to pray on someone.

THIW...

Sadly, it shouldn't. Arguably, from a pure fairness standpoint, we should be taxing all retirement income at the same rates that we tax regular earned income given that it makes little sense to tax young families in some attempt to subsidize the elderly who already have nationalized income and considerably income support, but at minimum, private and public pensioners should pay the same rates, not different rates.

FWIW, if I'm going to pay high taxes, then I want high levels of service from the government, not low levels of service with the rest of the money being going to support retirees who will get benefits that even future civil servants won't get.

There is no logical rationale to provide service every 5 minutes on a north/south route to Plumb Beach and 20 minute or no service on an east-west route when both routes will only carry a half dozen passengers. That is what the B44 SBS proposes. If you need to go east west,a north/south route does you no good.

To clarify, the above situation is not what exists now. It is the proposal after SBS will be instituted. The B44 now runs about every 10 minutes south of Avenue U with about 12 people per bus south of Avenue Z. The B4 operates every 15 or 20 minutes with about 6 passengers per bus when it does run. The MTA is proposing to double B44 service to every 5 minutes (so that buses will be as lightly used as the B4), although existing patronage levels clearly do not warrant an increase in service, in order to force people to use the B44 instead of the B4, so they can eliminate the B4 entirely in Sheepshead Bay thereby requiring anyone going to Bensonhurst or Bay Ridge to take an indirect subway trip via Atlantic Avenue.

That is why I proposed to send the SBS to Sheephead Bay Station instead to help out the overcrowded B36 and send the locals to Knapp Street, granting passengers a transfer to the SBS and another transfer if needed. Therw would be less of a temptation to use the B44 when you really want the B4.

You ask what is an acceptable level of service. A B4 every 30 minutes during middays and weekend if it ran on schedule, is better than no service at all.

I'm generally of the opinion that bus routes are duplicitous in many areas. In my neighborhood, there are buses running parallel to each other on every street from Classon Ave to Malcolm X Blvd, save for Marcy and Stuyvesant aves. It seems to me that in many areas, the MTA could benefit by eliminating or consolidating routes, but the general consensus is that this is such a terrible inconvenience that it cannot be allowed. "MTA can't cut MY bus!" The 4/44 seems to be another one of those type of issues.

Looking at a bus map can be misleading because because all the routes in Bed Stuy run on one-way streets, so the grid appears denser. Actually the routes are only spaced slightly closer there and it is justified because residential densities are heavier, bus usage is heavier and car ownership is lower than in outlying areas such as southern Brooklyn.

I'm not looking at a bus map, as I said, I live there. I'm aware that they're one-way streets, but that would still equate to a bus route every other street. As it stands, I walk to/from Nostrand to catch the 44 or the A far more often then I find use for the 43. If they got rid of the 43 outright, what would be the impact? A walk of 3 blocks? For most of my younger years, I would walk what google maps describes as 0.8 mi to the closest train station, and that walk didn't seem excessive. Why can't people in these areas be expected to do similar?
