I like the R46, just hope the the "R46SI" get a better retrofit than the rehabbed R44SI cars did. Too bad the SIR couldn't get hand-me-down M-type suburban cars retrofit for the SIR voltage, etc. |

Why does the IRT need 123 new subway cars? It's oldest cars (R62) aren't due for retirement for at least another decade. The extension of the 7 to Javits can't possibly require this kind of fleet expansion. |

It doesn't add up.They have about 220 R32's and 50 R42's to replace. Then they have 64 R46's to send to SI, which requires 80 60' replacements At minimum, they need 350 cars with no growth. |

M class cars would be overkill, and since Coney Island shop does truck overhaul work, they would have to stock all news parts and wheels for the in board trucks. If the MTA had any sense, there shouldn't be. The problem with the MTA lately is that AFAIK, the agency doesn't stipulate that all classes of NTTs MUST be fully compatible with all other classes. When the PA-4s were delivered, PATH made sure that all the previous car types that were GOHed would be fully compatible with the PA-4s so that they could run in mixed trains. NYCT failed to even ensure that all the GOH care could run with each other. Although in theory they were supposed to be able to the MTA failed to actually double check on their compatibility so that the manufacturers could be taken to task for their failure to meet requirements. |

OK, but even given that, they should have made sure that the East Division R160's be Kawaski, not Alstom, so as have to something more in common with the R143's that were already there, and cannot run anywhere else. |

I have a strong suspicion that eventually the SIR will become either a part of or direct subsidiary of NYCT rather than a direct subsidiary of MTA since it no longer has to be FRA compliant. Although some SI residents argue that SIR more resembles commuter RRs like LIRR or M-N than the subway, it is unique in that it operates entirely within the city of NY making it more rapid transit than commuter RR. |

If R46SI concept precedes the R179, what will back-fill for the missing R46's on the subway ?If R46's do go there and their 4 cars sets are not broken up, or even if all the A-A and A-B sets (28 cars ?) are sent there, there would be no opportunity for 5 cars trains, then maybe not a need for as many as 64 cars. |

I doubt it I think they would stay for at least 10 more years, They are going to need more cars for the future when 2nd ave opens, in the summer of 2012 the (L) is getting more trains added meaning the some of the R160's on the (J)/(M) lines will be taken off for the (L) meaning some R32's would run in their place, They are gonna need more than what the (MTA) wants to order if they just order the base order, expect to see at least 70-80 R32's or more remain in service by the time these R179's hit service 2nd ave subway will be open or nearly completed |

While I don't have any absolute knowledge regarding this, I would imagine that if the consortium that manufactured the R-143s and 160s gets the contract, it would be economically more feasible to stay with the same design since the company is already tooled up for that design and any significant change wold likely involve unnecessary expense which the MTA seems not to have. |

I have only seen Photos of the R143 and R160's They look like a nice looking car. So why not make the R179's look like them. I think maybe a Blue face plate and a strip might add alittle more fleer to them. |
