No, I'd wager you a beer that I'm right on this one. The opening day/weekend of new attractions is often exceptional, especially if said attraction has done its marketing right.

Agreed, even though it's a very secondary airport connection, and it would be a bit strange having trains terminating from opposite directions one station apart.

Yup. My initial thought was to terminate the (C) at Howard Beach for Airport people, then I though "Well, they might as well combine it with the Rockaway Park shuttle after all."

The problem is the (C) currently runs more often than the Rockaway Park train. The current schedules show (C) trains every 10 minutes during most of the day weekdays, with intervals on the Rockaway Park (S) ranging from 13 to 18 minutes. If it were 20 minutes, I'd say "End alternate (C) trains at Howard Beach, and send the others through to Rockaway Park." But that would result in a reduction of service to Rockaway Park. Would that be tolerated?

The video poker games at Yonkers don't offer the "double down" option that the ones at real casinos do. Is that by law? Is it the same way at Aqueduct?

Of course it will. And it will kill the buses to Atlantic City.

Look for Atlantic City casinos to start failing dramatically.

Where AC used to be the only convenient gaming in the northeast, there are now Casino operations in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland (slots only), and New York. So who needs to go to AC anymore?

It will be a much bigger draw than the racetrack was alone at this point for sure, but the hoopla will die down. When something is new, it's a novelty, so you will have a lot of people coming to see what it is all about....just like when a new restaurant opens, new store etc.
That said, I do see it being successful. Just not to the paranoia amount of crowds we see here in the beginning.

You are absolutely correct. THere is a huge novelty effect at the beginning. While obviously, it will have WAY more draw than just the horsetrack it was, it's not a destination like Mohegan Sun, AC, Las Vegas, etc is. While you will get plenty of day trippers, you will never have the people that go to places like Mohegan Sun, AC, etc "to get away" on a small trip. I don't see Ozone Park becoming a fun "weekend destination" for a small trip.

Trust me on this one. My brother-in-law is in charge of the casino at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The mechanical slots are still mechanical, with the computer chips reading the cash, tickets, reward cards, etc., but the actual game is still operated with the same reels and moving parts these machines have always had. If you open up the front of the machine and spin the reels, you can actually watch the rods and levers inside go up and down--just like they did in the Old West, with the "one-armed bandits". The payout rate and bet rate are set electronically, to be sure, but the things that make the machine an "old-fashioned" slot are still mechanical.

And I would make it clear to those two bit politicians the following:

1. The C would also be a 24/7 line if it goes to Lefferts. This would eliminate the overnight shuttle and the two-seat ride those passengers have, plus you would have both lines operate through parts of Queens 24/7 as opposed to just the A (increasing service overall for the stations in question) and potentially have the A operate express in the overnight since the C would also be running then.

2. If needed, a limited number of A trains can operate in the peak direction from Lefferts in the mornings (and especially early mornings since the Casino is not open until 8:00 AM) and to Lefferts in the afternoon.

3. Casino patrons will not stand for alternating A trains to the casino. If you want casino patrons off the roads and on the subways, we need to have ALL A trains operate to the Rockaways.

4. The As would alternate between Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park, though during overnights the As could do the round-robin to both Rockaway Park and Far Rockaway (terminating at Far Rockaway after going to Rockaway Park first), set up so that those actually going from Rockaway Park to JFK, Brooklyn and Manhattan can switch over at Beach 67th between trains with ample time to make the transfer.

And yes, if I'm operating the casino, I'm offering to pay at least some of the costs of making this happen, especially if it gets me more casino patrons.

For a while in the 80's that is exactly what did happen, the C ran to Rockaway Park. As for the headways, they don't need to make EVERY C train go all the way to Rockaway Park if they began to do that. They could still terminate some of them at Euclid, or even Howard Beach or Broad Channel.

Which makes them "run by robots."

And furthermore, the spinning of the reals are also set by the computer ELECTRONICALLY. It's not random mechanically spinning reals, they are Electronically spinning reals.

Yes, I know. ALL casinos main revenue comes from slots, and I have said that in just about every post here. But we aren't talking about where the most revenue for a casino comes from. The post I was responding to made it sound like this will basically kill AC, Mohegan Sun, etc, and I am saying that it won't, as table games are also a big draw. Saying they are a big draw does not imply they are bigger than slots.

Nobody saw table games happening in Pennsylvania either when PA got slots five years ago, but we have them now.

Years ago, the Mashantuckets tweaked their slot machines to pay off more often. While they were raking in the money, they became aware that if nobody was winning, people might lose interest.

These minor casinos that open will take away customers from other minor casinos but people will still want to travel to AC or Mashantucket/Mohegan as those places are more destinations for a getaway weekend and not just an amusement arcade. That and the real gamblers will want table games and also the paramutuel facilities as well.

your pal,
Fred

I wrote this: Huh? So you're ok playing slots with a robot but not playing cards with a robot? WTF?".

When will you admit that you are wrong? That the slots are electronic just like the card games? Several people now have told you that you are wrong. When will you start standing corrected for all the things I (and many others) have called you out on over the past few years? Why can't you simply admit when you are wrong? Why do you need to fight tooth and nail and always end up being wrong anyhow?

No, the post specifically said Atlantic City (and included Mohegan Sun as one of the factors killing Atlantic City). The numbers show table games are not a particularly big draw.

ALL of the machines are electronic. He thinks the ones that have spinning reels are actually mechanical instead of electronic. You press a button, an electronic message gets sent to the computer to spin the reels around. The computer then electronically says when they should stop. Your winnings or loss is then electronically calculated in your credits. When you are done, you press an button that electronically credits you, and electronically prints out a slip with how much money you still have. None of it is mechanical, unless you could the electronically spinning wheels as "mechanic"

Sorry, but the house has the mathematical advantage in slots and all the other casino games and while you can win in the short run you will lose in the long run. I don't even believe the hype in counting cards in blackjack, I believe the hype of barring counters was invented by the Vegas casinos to get more people to think they can win.
There is a big difference in horse racing in that you're NOT playing against the house, you're betting against the other patrons with the house getting a cut. Theoretically, mathematically you can find a horse who's odds are higher than his probability of winning where you can beat the house's cut. Not easy, especially because most gamblers don't have the discipline and patience but it can be done.

It's true for ALL casinos. Slots are the biggest money maker for a casino. NO one is denying that. That is not saying that table games aren't a big draw. There are many that ONLY go for the table games. There's a difference between "biggest money maker" and big draw.
