Interest doesn't seem to be all that strong on this project in this forum so I will post a small sample of the pictures I took. The rest are at DCMP 10-15-2011.

All of the trackwork in the junction is in place. Third rail has been installed from the junction west to the west end of the flyover on outnbound track N2 and several hundred feet short on track N1. Looks like all of the train control ground equipment for double crossover and on the K route tracks through the junction are in place. Those that are being used are connect to the West Falls Church K06 train control room. The contractor building the new K98 junction train control room next to the Fisher Avenue substation were working on the foundation for the building. Funny how all of the track work and related ground equipment for the junction is in place with nothing to connect it to.

K Route Orange line and VA I-66 flyover.

Tie tamper east of K Route and VA I-66 flyover track N1.

The Falls Church Yard lead tunnel has been fully excavated under the through lane of the inbound Connector Road and the contractor was constructing the tunnel invert slab. A short segment of the open cut between the connector road and the yard loop is done.

Falls Church Yard lead, west abutments K Route Orange line and VA I-66 flyover

Lifting gantry #1 is now working west of Capitol One Drive in the Tysons McLean (Tysons East) station. The gantry is positioned between the trackways over the center of the columns supporting the elevated structure at the west end of the station. It is still working the trackway spans through the station. Only 4 spans are left to be assembled, 2 on each track. The steel for the mezzanine is in place. About 2/3 of the concrete beams for the station platform are in place.

Lifting Gantry #1 at Capitol One Drive, Tysons East (Tysons McLean) station.

The western 2 cantilevered spans over the Capitol Beltway on outbound track N2 are not yet completed.

Unfinished cantilevered spans over the outer loop southbound VA I-495 Capitol Beltway at VA-123 Dolley Madison Boulevard.

The concrete beams for the station platform in the Tysons Center (Tysons 123) station are only done from the west end of the station to the east side of Tysons Boulevard. The contractor has begun clearing the area at Tysons Corner Ring Road and Tysons Boulevard for the station entrance and pedestrian bridge on the south side Chain Bridge Road that will connect the mall to the station.

West end Tysons 123 (Tysons Center) station

The cut and cover tunnels from the bored tunnel east of the Pike Seven Plaza (Tysons Central 7) station are almost complete. Only one segment of the platform slab at the west end remains to be poured, the next to last segment was poured early that morning.

East ancillary area Tysons Central 7 (Pike Seven Plaza) station track N2.

Only a hand full of segments need to be set in the cantilevered spans at Gosnall / WestPark Leesburg Pike intersection, outbound track N2 4, inbound track N1 2 east of the intersection, 4 outbound track N2, 3 inbound track N1 west of the intersection and 5 outbound track N2, 3 inbound track N1 over the intersection.

Spring Hill Road (Tysons West) is not as far along as Tysons McLean (Tysons East) though much that has been there is being done here. 5 of the 11 spans that will carry trains through the station on both tracks have been set. Most of the steel for the mezzanine is in place. 2 of the column head east of the station still have their form in place, 2 of the column head west of the station have not had the form set.

East end of Tyson West (Spring Hill Road) station.

West end of Tyson West (Spring Hill Road) station.

The straddle bent over eastbound Leesburg Pike still has the forms in place. All of the column west of the Leesburg Pike straddle bent and straddle bents over the Dulles Access and Toll Road are done The column west of the straddle bent over the Dulles Access Road is a cantilever span column. The footings west of the abutment are being readied for the retaining walls.

Straddle bent over eastbound Leesburg Pike east of Dulles Access and Toll Road.

Straddle bents over Dulles Access and Toll Roads west of Leesburg Pike.

West abutment Dulles Access Road west of Leesburg Pike.

Most of the barrier walls between Leesburg Pike and Wiehle are in place. Most of the places where they are not in place is where ground work for the traction power conduits is being installed from the substation and at the interlockings.

Trap Road looking east.

Beulah Road looking west.

Structural work at Wiehle Avenue is done. Precast concrete panels for the station facade have been delivered. The first one was set at the east end of the station on the north outbound side. The architectural design, texture and color of the panels bares no resemblance to the station renderings. In my opinion what being installed looks better then what is shown in those rendering. The dispatcher office at the west end of the platform has the same texture and color as the precast concrete facade panels. It appears there will be enough room to store 2 8 car train in the tail tracks west of the pocket track at the Wiehle Avenue station. I had assumed there would be no trackage west of the pocket track in the Phase I part of the this project.

I always appreciate your updates. I used to work out of Dulles and periodically had to take the Flyer over to West Falls Church for the Metro to get myself down to DCA. I enjoy your pictures but, and I mean this as a compliment, the descriptions that accompany are so far beyond my knowledge of the subject that I really cannot formulate a coherent response even if I have a question. Anyway, I hope you'll continue to post about "the Corridor" here despite the perceived lack of interest.

Thanks. I do look at your updates even if I don't comment. But to an extent you are correct. It's not as interesting to me as I thought it would be. I think that it's a combination of me being averse to rail and especially rail stations being located in freeway medians along with it being built in a suburban, almost rural looking area. It looks more like commuter rail.

As others have stated, I may not comment, but I certainly do like viewing the photos, and checking in on the progress. Given that WMATA's a short Amtrak ride away, there's a very high chance that I'll end up riding this along with whatever stretches of DC Streetcar finally open up in 2013. I'll probably end up visiting WMATA as I'm quite fond of the Most Blessed Serene Dirigiste State Subway despite its flaws...

I swear, if you look at the first photo, you'd think the line would be open in a few months. The rest of the photos, OTOH, show that it's going to take some time. Of course, that's what happens when there's prefabricated sections and automated equipment along with tunnelling in generous conditions.

I think that it's a combination of me being averse to rail and especially rail stations being located in freeway medians

Which is interesting given that for this phase, all of the Tysons Stations are on local roads, Reston-Wiehle Avenue and Wolf Trap Rd if that's ever opened will be in the median. For the second phase, most of the stations, IIRC, will be in the median, but given the situation, it's certainly better than nothing. There will be attempts at TOD by the local authorities though...

suburban, almost rural looking area. It looks more like commuter rail

Compared to say, most of Los Angeles County, it's low density, and even compared with Town of Hempstead, it's low density since it isn't a full stream of continuous development, but compared with some other places, it's a "normal crowded" suburb with the exception of the two non-airport stations in Loudon County. Admittedly, the line follows the ROW of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, but that's a rail-trail, so it's far easier to just use the neighbouring highway ROW, but the operations practices are not commuter rail*. FWIW, I suspect that once the line opens, you may see some ridership from DC residents and from some who live in Eastern suburban areas that need to get to work in that area and have workplaces that are within walking distance of the stations.

*In the United States, FRA regulations, union rules, and "not invented here" issues prevent applying rapid transit techniques to mainline railways, hence why we end up with half-assed tools like BART, WMATA, MBTA's Braintree Branch, the perpetual calls to extend NYCTA service further into the outerboros, or the LAMCTA Gold Line's perpetual extension to Azusa.

Yeah, I just noticed that one or more of the stations was in a median. The Wiehle one I guess. Many people in LA (including transit advocates) want to build more rail inside freeways, but that's a terrible idea from my experience. The stations are unacceptably loud and when you exit it's a long walk to get anywhere. Especially next to suburban freeways.

And I feel the same way about the gold line extension to Tucson, or wherever the latest endpoint is. I barely pay any attention to it but I try and stay up on every new development for Expo and Crenshaw.

One of the five station in Phase I is in the median of the airport access road, two of the remaining four are in the median of the suburban arterial through Tysons Corner, the other two are on the side of the other suburban arterial through Tysons Corner.

I am amazed at the pace of this project.

The project is roughly 3 months behind schedule. But then I always thought their projected completion date was some what optimistic. They are also figuring the project may come in over budget, the changes that are pushing it over budget were made by WMATA and are related to NTSB recommendation.

One of the three lifting gantries, the one assembling the elevated over the Capitol Beltway crapped the bed several months ago. The contractor is using a crane to hang the segments in those spans.

Fairfax County and the folks living in the neighborhood where the Fisher Avenue traction power substation is had issues with Dulles Transit Partners over the expansion of the traction power substation to accommodate the junction train control room. Dulles Transit Partners wanted to put a second story on the building, the neighborhood objected to that, they are putting the train control room in a building on a piece of property next to the substation that is to small to build a house on.

Why did you assume there would be no tail tracks at Whielie? I would have assumed that they would have built them.

I never made such an assumption. I figured they were only going to build the pocket track and put bumper posts beyond the turnout on the west end of the pocket track interlocking. That was the configuration at Farragut North and Silver Spring before the routes were extended further north.

Your riding of the first DC Streetcars line will likely happen after the Phase I of the DCMP open. The Anacostia route is only finished as far north as Suitland Parkway, The car house on South Capitol Street is yet to have the ground broken for it. The routing North of Suitland Parkway has not been settled.

The car house for H Street Benning Road route has yet to be built, the stop and all the access infrastructure behind Union Station need to be built, there is no crossover at the temporary eastern terminal at Oklahoma Avenue.

John, as otherwise posted, I am from DC originally, so WMATA IS of interest. It might be that the Dulles line gets finished before the last of my kin move away from DC. I had hoped the streetcars would start up in 2012 for a half century after the end in Jan 62.

I had hoped the streetcars would start up in 2012 for a half century after the end in Jan 62.

Don’t hold your breath, Phase I of the DCMP will likely open before the streetcars start running on the street of DC.

Seems like a mistake to me not to have one there.

Trains will be operating at headway no closer then 6 minutes during peak as they will be sharing tracks with Orange and Blue lines east of West Falls Church and Rosslyn respectively. I don’t see the lack of a crossover east of the station being that big of a deal. There is a double crossover just under 2 miles to the east.

Last three DCMP post I have made rendered no responses, the one before those rendered one. Unlike other forums I have no idea how many reads are being made without some people commenting.

Interesting factoid:

In all those pictures, all the humans are in cars. Except for construction workers with safety vests and hardhats.

There is a sidewalk to be seen on (I think) one side of Rt 7 in two of the pictures.

It'd be slow going to try to travel anywhere on tracks that are only being built . . . never mind having an element of danger and illegality . . .

But there isn't a single pedestrian. Goes back to what I was saying about it being very suburban on a freeway. Turns out that it's not a freeway, but it's not a pedestrian area either. It'll be all park and ride along with reverse commuters.

John, I look at a lot without saying boo. typing, "nice pix" umpteen times seems silly. Let me just say I DO appreciate your stuff, TMP, JM's obsessive signals documentation, Fred G, EBT, and Chuchubob. I am sure I have left out several others as well as Peter Ehrlich aka Milantram whose work I know going back to pix in Passenger Train Journal when the F Market was new. Given the dross around here, I have lurked more than participated. If the DC streetcar ever does start up, I expect to be there possibly with the same Nikon I used to shoot the finale in 62 (if there is any wet film still available).

There is a sidewalk to be seen on (I think) one side of Rt 7 in two of the pictures.

The pictures that show them are on the north side, There are sidewalk on both sides of VA-7 Leesburg Pike now. Prior to the lane relocating to accommodate the metrorail easement in the median there were none.

Here are couple showing the sidewalk on the south side:

Post-tension segments staged along Leesburg Pike between Gosnell Road / Westpark Drive and Spring Hill Road

West end of Tyson West (Spring Hill Road) station

Added bonus, sidewalk along the south side of VA-123 Dolley Madison Boulevard:

VA-267 Dulles Connector Road / Anderson Road and VA-123 Dolley Madison Boulevard

Prior to the beginning of construction I believe there was a sidewalk on the north side VA-123 Dolley Madison Boulevard between Anderson Road and Capitol One Drive.

At the rate things are going there may not be any available. I happen to believe Phase I of the DCMP will be opened before any of the new streetcars start rolling in DC.

See, that's the fallacy of this whole Dulles extension.

Most of the big, stone-front or glass-front office buildings you see in Tyson's corner owned by giant insurance companies or giant banks or giant defense contractors? There is no pedestrian entrance. The only way in is to walk in through the parking garage.

Normally I'd rail against the retail establishments with 4 acres of parking you have to walk through just to get to the front door. But not this time. This time they're the best possible scenario for pedestrian access.

Of course, after Tyson's is opened and rail passengers have to walk somewhere from a station, crossing route 7 will seem pretty minor compared to the other inconveniences they encounter on their way to any destination.

Nobody will have to cross Leesburg Pike (route 7) or Dolley Madison Boulevard VA-123 for that matter to get to the stations. All four of the station will have entrances on both sides of those roads.

Fairfax County has big plans for how Tysons Corner will be further developed in the coming years. The plan calls for virtually all of those acres of parking lots to be tucked under or behind the buildings. What they are shooting for is an urban street grid to cutup what's already there. The car dealers along Leesburg Pike have already begun to vacate leaving those properties to be developed in a manner more in keeping to what one would see in the urban core of a big city.

When all is said and done what will end up getting built out will not be perfect but it will be a hell of lot more so called 'pedestrian friendly'.

If I had the camera I have now 35 years ago I would now have a collection of subway construction pictures that that would fill a couple terabyte hard drive space.
