Speaking of the Boonton line ...

I'm reading an interesting book called "Erie Lackawanna: Death Of An American Railroad". In it, it contains a map of the Erie system circa 1930. According to it, what we now call the "Main Line" between Patterson and Hoboken is actually the old Lackawanna Boonton line. When and why was this alignment re-arranged? What's left of the original main line between here and Jersey City, if anything?
