It was for the most part a single track operation. What kept the line afloat was the freight service for the dairy people along the line. When the rural characteristics started to change in Sussex County, most sold out to real estate developers who wanted to make some parts of the county more suburban and less rural. So there went the needed revenue to keep it afloat. From then on, E-L ended all operations to Branchville.
