One man crews are just as pointless as two man crews for a majority of jobs. What the Railroads really want but have nor said it out loud yet is a ZERO man crew.Unless a job requires switching en-route, there is no reason to have a crew on freight trains. The tower operator in Ft. Worth (On in Bangalore--whats the difference) gives the train a green light and it makes the run in and out of sidings etc until it reaches its next yard point which could be 500 or 600 miles away. If a train goes down, it will stop until a crew gets out there to restore things. If some idiot crosses in front of the train you can just sweep up the remains and feed them to the lions in a near by zoo, because maned or unmanned, that trains isn't going to stop in time to make any difference to the hamburger driving the car. |
