Re: Class 1 RRs “want” one man crew?

"Unless a job requires switching en-route, there is no reason to have a crew on freight trains."

How about "unplanned" switching? Happens from time to time. When a hot box detector detects a hot box & the car has to be set out at the nearest siding. How does a crewless train do that?

One more little thing...crewless train goes into emergency & the train consist straddles a grade crossing or two. With no one around to cut up the train to resume auto traffic flow, now a town is tied up. God help the poor soul in an ambulance that can't get to the nearest hosp due to a train blocking the road. I wonder what his/her DC would read?
Next train down the track would be a charter full of lawyers.

You couldn't call them ambulance chasers because the ambulance is not moving a/c stuck by the train on the grade crossing!.
