The Lexington Ave section of the Old Main Line was supposed to have run over Gates Ave, instead. Other than that, the Brooklyn City officials chose this unusual routing to serve its residents only. They did not want the Brooklyn Elevated RR to be serving Long Island Railroad customers, also. The original route, from Van Sicklen Ave toFulton Ferry (under the Brooklyn Bridge) did not intersect any LIRR stations on purpose. By the time the Broadway (B'klyn) and Kings County Elevated routes were opened in 1888, some 4 years later, attitudes towards the LIRR had changed. |
