A subway route(s) under Lafayette Ave had been on the drawing board, even before the Dual Contracts of 1913. The thinking was that it would expand the Downtown shopping/business area immediately to the northeast along Lafayette. While I do like the idea of a crosstown subway connection to the Franklin shuttle, that would have meant an express station at Franklin, instead of Nostrand Ave. A last minute change of plans converted Nostrand/Fulton from a local to a bi-level express station. At that time, the master plan for Brooklyn also called for a satellite business district, apart from the downtown area, to be centered at Nostrand/Fulton. |
