Simply put, the LIRR is in exanstance primarily for the passengers of Nassau & Suffolk Counties. Attitude being Queens & Bklyn has its subways & busses. The Whitestone branch was eliminated primarily due to its many grade crossings. The rationale for closing Elmhurst was the nearby IND Subway. The Rockaway Beach branch was abandoned a/c the Green Bus running up & down Woodhaven Blvd and Atlantic Ave.IIRC with the last Subway strike, LIRR trains highballed all Queens Stations for fear of dangerous overcrowding & causing serious delays. Delays & inconvienence to its bread & butter, Nassau & Suffolk riders...and votors |
