Yeah, I know many factors doomed the Arlington and South Beach branches. The ironic thing is that I bet if they existed today, they'd be heavily patronized, and no politician would dare let them die. Alas :(Also, regarding the fire, I'm also sure that nowadays, there's no way the public would accept the cause not being determined. It was a huge structure to be destroyed that quickly. If I had to guess- and it would be just a guess- maybe it was an electrical issue, or improper storage of fuel or flammable material that did it. I know after the 1991 fire at Whitehall (attributed initially to homeless people in the cockloft area, but ultimately also undetermined) , the SI Advance documented that homeless people were setting fires for warmth at St. George- right near barrels of diesel fuel and/or waste oil!! |
