Do you know what caused the fire at St. George Terminal?

No one seems to know for sure. There are several conflicting accounts. What is known is that the first alarmed was raised at 1:58 PM. The entire terminal was engulfed in flames in a very short time.

Also, with the loss of 8 cars, that event was the beginning of the end of South Beach and North Shore service on the SIRT.

Staten Island was sparsely populated in the late 1940's and 50's. The Arlington Line ran with two car during the rush hours and one car at all other times. The South Beach Line always ran with one car. Automobile ownership increased dramatically after World War II. The auto gave provided a great deal of flexibility to many people. This caused a loss of revenue to many rail lines and the SIRT was no exception.
