I was 12 that year- but more in tune with the news than most kids. I do remember being in the car with my Dad driving on West Street in 1980-81. I saw all the abandoned and burned piers, the abandoned but still standing elevated highway (except for the portion between Jane and West 26th Streets that was demolished in 1977 or '78 {and included the collapsed portion by Gansevoort), and people using it as an unauthorized high line.It was also in 1980 that I noticed Desbrosses Street. How could one miss a name like that, right? I even knew from watching the news about how a piece had collapsed and the part of the highway around it were demolished. I also remember the enormous 1978 warehouse fire in Bushwick. But I don't recall the actual pier fires. Wish I did... |
