Interestingly, I think that Bway/Nassau was intended to be named Fulton St, the name that it was recently changed to. based on certain information I have seen regarding the IND subway. Somewhere, I can’t recall where, I saw a publication issued by the City of NY that touted the supposedly faster running times from uptown Manhattan to Downtown and it specifically mentioned how long it would take to get from various stations in uptown Manhattan to Fulton St. it seems that the IND was a bit inconsistent in assigning station names where only one station was on a particular street under which a line passed. For example, Steinway Street station issituated lengthwise under Steinway Street but The station under Pennsylvania Av in the Fulton St Line is named “Liberty Av” even though Penna Av would be a more appropriate name for it. The same is true of Bway/Nassau although that has now been corrected by the renaming. The IRT also has a few similar stations such as Park Place, Clark St and Eastern Pky which are lengthwise under the streets for which they are named. E/Pky is a bit of an enigma since not only is that station under the thoroughfare for which it is named but the entire IRT Bkln Line between Grand Army Plaza and Utica Av runs under E/Pky. I have heard that the station name was to have been "Institute Park” more or less for the Bkln Museum but for some reason it was changed. If I recall the location, the closest main drag to that station that crosses E/Pky is Washington Av so why it wasn’t named that is anyones guess.
