Stan Fischler's book on the subway includes a map for subway expansion that, IIRC, dates to around 1940 or so. The map includes, among other things, a line from The broadway/57th station shooting up underneath Central park, then in upper manhattan, running underneath morningside avenue to some point roughly at 125th street.

That said, any attempt to connect Broadway as it presently stands is a nice idea, but ultimately not a wise expenditure of capital dollars. Broadway BMT has since been connected to the 63rd tunnel, which is far more useful than a connection to CPW would be.

There are probably 20 projects that are more worthwhile than this.
