Obama may have paid less in taxes than his own secretary |

Posted by Chris R16/R2730 on Fri Apr 13 12:55:56 2012 For a class warrior, 20 percent is pathetically low. Many will excuse him and cover for him, but when you live in a tax subsidized glass house ...http://www.whitehousedossier.com/2012/04/13/obama-pay-secretary/ |

Obama gave away most of his salary to charity, which is why he wound up in a low "effective tax rate".Do the math. She paid %18.42 effective tax rate on federal taxes. It says Obama paid 20.5 but that's just his federeal(the article misleads by adding up her total tax burden compared to Obama's federal alone). |

No Republican presidential candidate with an identical tax return would get cut such slack. Romney is vilified for his 13 % tax rate because he gave a LOT more to charity and doesn't rely on a taxable salary for his primary income. IOW, everyone who pays taxes has options open to them that they take. Romney is an uncaring rich bastard. Warren Buffet is a hero. |

Now it's "13%" for Romney? I thought it was "16%"? You're right that he gives money away to charity.I agree that it's all class warfare. But the article is misleading because it does not point out that Obama gives a lot of money away, and also adds up the total tax burden of the secretary instead of showing her federal burden, which is just over 18%. |

It's 13%.Rmoney tithes to the Mormons. That's not really giving to charity, as those funds are used for activities and administration of that church that don't fall into the realm of "charitable work" such as real estate development, and other for profit investment. The charitable work they do is focused solely on their membership. They take care of their own but are completely insular about it. True charity comes as an act of giving, without an attached agenda. This..... not so much. |

You mean Obama may have paid less taxes as a fraction of his income, vs. his "secretary"? The President of the United States is currently paid $400,000/yr., and during his time in office, as per the Constitution, he may not "receive any other emolument from the United states, or any of them". If, assuming he kept his net, Obama paid $160K in total taxes (about 40%), and his secretary paid a greater fraction of her income in taxes, then yes, Obama did pay less tax than her. But somehow, I seriously doubt his secretary's tax--$22,000--is more that 40% of what the WH pays her. |

I make use of the charitable deduction, the deduction for state income and property tax, and the reduced rate for capital gains. I'd be happy if they all went away (along with the mortgage interest deduction, which I don't use) in return for the rates for each bracket being lowered. |

You said "schemes" to make it sound wrong. Illegal. It's not.You said "fair" because that's how the NY Times teachers you to think. It's about revenue. If the cap gains goes up to 23%, the Treasury could end up with less revenue, that's not fair to people on entitlements who need that money. Would you want to raise cap gains even if it means less revenues just to be "fair"? |

What do you mean by "charitable contributions from his books"? Do you mean to say he has revenues from those books and then donates to charity, which reduces his tax burden?I agree that his tax rate is normal for someone in his bracket. People don't understand that the top bracket is around 35% starting at almost $400,000. So every dollar under that amount is taxed at a lower rate. People are also forgetting that Obama paid $30,000 or so in Illinois taxes. I wonder why Obama is still paying local taxes in Illinois? He's not a full-time DC resident? |

He donates the profits from his books (not the revenue, just the profits, I believe, but I could be mistaken) to charity. The profits increase his income, but it is equally offset by his donation of those profits to charity. So his tax is calculated on his net income after the charitable contributions, but the "tax rate" calculation people are throwing around compares his tax paid to his gross income before donating to charity. |
