I don't mind the new office space. It's the new apartments that are stupid (and built like shit). Nowhere to park, no new schools, etc. The ridiculous hotels in Historic SMAZville. In the old days we would have blown up those construction sites. The place was better off in the past when after the office and factory workers went home, the hookers would take over. Unlike the new tofu-eating, lacrosse-loving wannabe-yuppie scum from Nebraska, at least the whores were friendly and I knew them all by name and where they came from. They are built like shit. Large % of the new apartments are 1BR. That attracts that certain element. I laugh at one of the new building that blocks the billboard on the upper level approach just over Jackson Ave by the NYCT crew office. There's even a bustling night life on Vernon near the LIC LIRR station. |

It's the ones near QP, Crescent St and Jackson Av that piss me off. They are garbage and are destroying the neighborhood. |

Those places only generate good revenue for the city now that they are new and the first generation of idiots bought them at inflated prices. They are so shoddily built and located in such noisy and congested areas that they will become blighted within a decade or two and will then become halfway houses, homeless shelters or drug-rehab places. They are trash. |

I remember the fan story. I used 50th Ave between 2nd and 5th Streets as a lover's lane in 1992. It's not much of a wasteland these days. It's very developed. They have a really good health food store there. It's the ones near QP, Crescent St and Jackson Av that piss me off. They are garbage and are destroying the neighborhood. I agree. |

The LIC crowd would feel out of place on Austin Street. That new LIC crowd has no loyalty to LIC/Astoria/Sunnyside. They don't appreciate Queens and make no attempt to even try. They are out-of-towners wanting to be Sarah Jessica Parker or Chloe Sevigny who couldn't afford Manhattan and are mad about it. They are pure Bridge and Tunnel riffraff. They don't even know where Forest Hills or Rego Park is even after they've been here 10 years. I love Manhattan, it's the best, but there is more to NYC than just that. |

Eh, there will always be somebody crazy enough to buy them at even higher prices later on...No, there will not ALWAYS be such a person. There will however be a person who would buy such a property and convert it into a room-by-the-hour hotel or contract it out as a halfway house for the NY DOC (for which the QP area is perfect). They're still better looking than most of the pre-war single family stock in most of the borough. Only because they are new. Wait a few more years. Those older single-family or two-family houses that you mock are sustainable for that kind of neighborhood and there will always be buyers who want them, will raise a family in them and will renovate and improve them. They will ALWAYS be in demand. Especially with the solid immigrant families and their kids who have always made Astoria/LIC great. They don't require new sewer, water and power infrastructure or new schools and hospitals. They are the foundation of places like Astoria/LIC. |

Those older single-family or two-family houses that you mock are sustainable for that kind of neighborhood and there will always be buyers who want them, will raise a family in them and will renovate and improve them.I grew up in one of them for twenty years, so I'm rather biased and tend to lack any real appreciation for them. It's better than nothing, but I much preferred the aesthetics of the cape cods near by or the Tudors that my cousins lived in. for which the QP area is perfect) One could argue that given the real estate market issues, we need to supply more housing, especially in a transit rich area in order to increase the supply and thus push down real estate prices and rents in order to make the city more affordable. In other words, I'd rather see some of those older homes replaced with condos for those immigrant families to buy into so they're not renting somebody's basement. |

American Eagle ATR-72?Back in the day, AA (and MQ (American Eagle)) had a hub at SJU. Bunch of ATRs to all the surrounding islands (and a few other cities in PR). I saw quite a few when I made a weekend visit to San Juan 6 years ago. That is going away soon, AA is pulling down the hub, and the ATRs will be leaving the fleet. May be in part to AA's bankruptcy, also, B6 has been pwning them at SJU, also, most of the destinations that MQ served can be served directly from MIA by AA mainline, the few that can't will just be dropped by AA/MQ. |

Nice drive to the SF Bay Area though. :)Many years ago, a friend and I drove from LA to SF (well, he drove, I was along for the ride). Going up, we took the 5 over the Grapevine (no snow, this was in mid-July) up to a highway where we cut across going west and picked up US 101 in Gilroy (the garlic capital of the world, and I must say, it was rather "fragrant" as we passed through). Once on 101, we stopped by Stanford University (even went up into the Hoover Tower, then on in to SF. Returning to L. A., we took 101 down to Oxnard, then picked up California 1 (PCH) on in. This was a summer Sunday afternoon, so we picked up traffic in Santa Barbara (back then (1989), US 101 didn't run through as a divided highway, there was a brief segment of "street running" and the attendant traffic. More traffic around the Ventura/L. A. County border, then finally, traffic on PCH through Malibu was a nightmare. Still a fun drive. :) |
