I always leave a cash tip. because A) restaurants often steal part of the tip. and B) that way waiter of waitress doesn't have to pay taxes on it.There are a couple of problems with that way of thinking. First is that the waiter/waitress does have to pay taxes on that amount. By leaving them cash, you encourage the possibility that they illegally don't report that cash and don't pay tax on it. Second is that many restaurants pool the tips and have a means of distribution such that the non-front line staff also get a share (busboys, etc.). By giving a cash tip to the waiter you increase the possibility that the non-client facing staff (who probably need the money even more than the waiter) gets screwed. |

I prefer using a credit card for entirely selfish reasons. I find spending cash for any reason to be generally inconvenient. The more often I spend it, the more often I have to get cash from an ATM. If I'm spending cash on a tip, I'd have to spend it on the restaurant check to get the right amount of change, and then I will waste perfectly good, versatile small bills that I would then not have available where there is no option for change and be forced to spend cash where I don't want it to make more change. |

Ignites Class Warfare, posted by dand124 on Tue Feb 28 09:09:59 2012. i never heard of other employees being stiffed by waitstaff. on the other hand i know more than one person who had the restaurant steal a portion of the tip from the waitstaff. granted this type of theft is less likely to happen at the type of places i eat at but still.An old girlfriend of mine -- many many years ago -- was "of Hispanic origin". Her mother always made it a point to give a cash tip directly to the busboy (almost always also "of Hispanic origin") because she believed strongly that the waiters and waitresses would not share the tips equitably. I have no idea on what she based this, but the story has stuck with me and rather than go around doling out cash tips individually to everyone in the restaurant, I just put it on the credit card and allow the restaurant to divvy things up. The color of the real and fake "ink" doesn't even match. Let's forget the technical stuff for a while. The idea a rich banker would do something like this is absurd. Tips to them are nothing. Poorer people are far more likely to use a low tip to communicate disapproval of bad service. As someone who worked in the service industry when younger, I can say that waiters and waitresses LOVE guys like this and will bend over backwards in hopes of a larger tip (which they almost always get). The entire concept of a miserly millionaire using a minimal (1 percent to boot!) tip to punish a bad waiter has no foundation in the real world, it only exists in the feverish minds of class warfare buffoons like yourself. It was obvious bullshit even before it was confirmed bullshit. You are like the anthropologist who thought Piltdown Man was real, even though a cursory examination of the jaw and skull of said find obviously did not fit together and obviously came from two different species. |
