It isn't the customer's job to encourage tax compliance, but isn't it the citizen's responsibility?When a doctor or a contractor asks you to pay cash, anyone with a functioning brain knows it is because they plan to under-report their income and pay less tax as a result. This should be highly offensive to people -- especially those who earn all or most of their income by reportable means. When that doctor under-reports their income and under-pays their "fair share" of taxes, who do you think is making up the difference? The Upper West Side therapist crowd are probably the most offensive examples -- taking in hordes of (likely unreported) cash payments and then voting for others to pay their "fair share". |

Wouldn't the explanation of the system policing itself actually apply even sooner if the tips were not in cash? After all, the wait staff could keep a running tally of tips that were added to their bills over the course of the night and then total those amounts at the end of the night and compare to what management claimed the total tips were. Cash becomes this whole game theory of "should I put all my cash tips into the pot -- because I think Bob skims 10% every night". In 30+ years of working -- everything from a paper boy through my current job -- I've never seen a cash based system that didn't have some degree of abuse involved. The less auditable the system, the more abuse there was. |

Ignites Class Warfare, posted by Charles G on Wed Feb 29 09:13:51 2012. e original logic for leaving a cash tip was that people didn't trust the owner/manager of the business to distribute tips fairly.Wouldn't the explanation of the system policing itself actually apply even sooner if the tips were not in cash? After all, the wait staff could keep a running tally of tips that were added to their bills over the course of the night and then total those amounts at the end of the night and compare to what management claimed the total tips were. the problem is anyone who complains about the restaurant stealing the tip will get fired. this is more of an issue at higher end places. Cash becomes this whole game theory of "should I put all my cash tips into the pot -- because I think Bob skims 10% every night". i don't know of many places that have "pool". it's more of the waitstaff "tipping the other employees. besides it easier for a hostess to make life difficult for a waiter than it is for a a waiter to make life difficult for an owner. |
