Regarding a Feb. 18 headline on its mobile website, ESPN issued the following statement: "Last night, ESPN.com's mobile website posted an offensive headline referencing Jeremy Lin at 2:30 a.m. ET. The headline was removed at 3:05 a.m. We are conducting a complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures and are determining appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again. We regret and apologize for this mistake."

Of course, most Asians don't give a shit. Some will pretend to be offended because that's the mood in America. Crying racism.

In reality, Asians are the model minority in America. They won't care. They're not on the level of other groups who live to find racism or sexism or "phobia" in everything.

I have read a bunch of articles on Lin and the ones from Asia are very open about race. They talk about Lin being yellow and how they identify with him more than they do with the black players. It makes perfect sense and while we all know that people better identify with people that look like them, you can't say such things here. And that they are comfortable using a color like "yellow" to identify themselves in an article seems odd as well. Can you imagine ESPN calling Lin "yellow" in a news story?

Interesting.

You know, there's a wrestler in WWE named Brodus Clay. He was Snoop-Dog's bodyguard years ago.

Vince McMahon pulled him from television saying he's not ready. I offer a different explanation. I say he was pulled because Linda McMahon is running for office in November and doesn't want WWE to do anything that could derail her hopes.

Here's the act.

That's because P.C. is really an invention of outbred NW Europeans.

Other groups (Eastern Europeans, Asians, etc...) have no trouble calling it as it is...

They talk about Lin being yellow and how they identify with him more than they do with the black players.

Most people identify with their own "kind" (race in this case). Some are much more honest about this than others.

It makes perfect sense and while we all know that people better identify with people that look like them, you can't say such things here. No excuses, the phrase should never have been used . . but, let's see. . .

the anchor says it on air, apologizes next day and is suspended. The headline writer, probably some young kid, later the same night, obviously picking up on the phrase the anchor used, uses the same phrase (before the furor arises), and is fired???

Typically sports headlines use a common phrase in reference to a team, a game, a result, or a player. Especially with Jeremy Lin. "Chink in the armor" is a common phrase, but it has the appearance of referencing Lin since that's how their headlines typically work. They don't typically use common phrases just because they are common and descriptive, especially when they might be understood a different way.

There seems to be even more to the story here, if the DN is to be believed. Seems that "chink in the armor" is one of the announcer's "prerecorded phrases" and was used before in describing a particular situation of sports defense not being adequate. The article doesn't offer how many times he's said the phrase before but mentioned that he's said that at least once before in a situation where there wasn't any Lin involved at all.

Sports coverage requires ad lib, and being able to keep talking without benefit of a script. If this is one of his "stable of phrases" I know how hard it is to analyze things when you're being paid to keep your lips moving when the tally light is on. Therefore, the phrase may have not been intended in any way the way it ended up being used.

As to the writer, one would expect more "thought" since there isn't live television pressure when composing a headline, and you're supposed to be thoughtful and perhaps at Disney there, be required to turn it into something clever. Given what I read there then, I would give the 'caster a pass if they didn't mean it the way it came out (since it's apparently one of his stockroom of phrases) but I'd hammer the writer for using it since the writer's job is to sit and carefully think out phrasing before posting it.

Good old Disney though ... when the fertilizer hits the ventilator and it will not be evenly distributed, they break out a bazooka. :(

I'm glad that the only live television I ever did was news, and I had a script to read. It's a lot harder when you have to ad lib everything except for what's on your stats sheet. I know the pressure of live TV and the need to motormouth when the camera is on you and all you have to draw on as something goes down in your face is your collection of phrases. Seriously no time to think, you gotta keep the patter going lest you pull that "duh" on camera that ends your career on a scale of ESPN.

I looked at the piece in question and if you're trying to be clever, there's always that second of pause as you mentally search for the right pun. I noted that as the words slipped past his lips that there was absolutely no pause, and to me that was the giveaway that it was a mindless automatic phrase out of him there. The words were clearly not intentional on his part because the flow was not halted by a conscious choice of words to string along.

The writer and the editor though cannot get such a pass simply on the basis that they have at least a whole minute without similar pressure to choose their words, reread what they wrote for a spell check's worth at least before posting. Whether it occurred to them or not, print is a conscious choice and the words should have been considered at least. Live TV is one thing, editorial content is another. That is supposed to be properly considered.

That all said, "chink in the armor" isn't a racist phrase at all, the "chink" has an entirely different meaning than slipping in the "n-word" which has no alternate meanings. It's kinda sad that there are hypersensitive people out there who will find a cause to get pissed off about something that sounds LIKE an offensive word but has another meaning entirely. But as far as blame being assigned here, it's pretty clear to me what happened. Those who haven't had their face on camera in a high pressure situation may not have known how that side of it works.

It's sorta like that flap a few years back when some white councilman in DC used the word "niggardly" and was unjustly raked over the coals.

I suspect that the mobile headline was probably unintentional as well, perhaps his phrase made it to the edit desk and they just flung it in there with the rest of what had to go out. I wouldn't necessarily blame the writer, but would definitely whip them. The real blame here lies with the editor since the job of an editor is to be the final arbiter of content and gatekeeper for the stupid. Editors read and approve the end product, writers tend to be too busy to think. Editors get PAID to think.

Like I said though in my other reply here, "chink in the armor" shouldn't be considered offensive unless it was in caps or with elipses since it's not the same concept as "chink" by itself. Reminds me of a word that is no longer in use which had a crisp and precise meaning that can no longer be said because some people are "ignant" known as "niggardly" which has now vanished from the language as a result.

This whole hoohah reminds me of Chicago sportscaster Harry Caray and his world-famous phrase, "Holy cow" ... if the Cubs had a Hindi pitcher, we'd probably be going through all this earlier, and it would be just as stupid as this hoohah ... offense should be taken in context of the meaning in my eyes. This time, it appears to be out of bounds. Are we going to end up with a language in which the only two acceptable words are "oooh" and "ahhh?" :-\

Heh. While you were writing about this, I was writing about the same thing. It's a sad day when stupid people get to decide the rules for everybody else. I personally would have much rather that this situation be explained for what really happened, and a formal "apology to the stupid people who took it the wrong way" issued after the explanation.

But that's now how it works anymore. :(
